Grub Control Safe for Pets: What to Use and Avoid

Several grub control options are safe to use around dogs and cats, ranging from biological treatments with virtually zero risk to low-toxicity chemicals that the EPA classifies as reduced-risk. The key is choosing the right product and following basic precautions after application. Here’s what works, what to avoid, and how to keep your pets safe throughout the process.

Beneficial Nematodes: The Safest Option

Beneficial nematodes are microscopic worms that hunt grub larvae in the soil. They’re living organisms, not chemicals, and they pose no risk to pets, people, or plants. Cornell University’s Integrated Pest Management program confirms that beneficial nematodes “do not harm plants or animals” and have little impact on non-target species. Your dog could roll on a freshly treated lawn without concern.

The species most effective against lawn grubs is Heterorhabditis bacteriophora. These nematodes actively seek out grub larvae underground, enter their bodies, and kill them within a few days. They work on Japanese beetle grubs, masked chafers, billbugs, and black vine weevils, covering the most common lawn-damaging species.

The tradeoff is that nematodes require specific conditions to work well. Soil temperatures need to be above 68°F, so late summer is the ideal window in most of the U.S. You’ll need to apply them in early morning or evening to avoid UV damage, water the lawn before and after application, and keep the soil moist for at least two weeks. Apply at a rate of roughly 24,000 nematodes per square foot for reliable results. They come as a powder or gel you mix into water and spray with standard equipment.

Bt Galleriae: A Low-Risk Microbial Treatment

Products containing Bacillus thuringiensis galleriae (sold as GrubGone!) use a naturally occurring soil bacterium to target beetle larvae. The University of Illinois Extension describes this microbial product as having “low toxicity to people and pets.” It works differently from nematodes, using bacterial proteins that are toxic to grub digestive systems but harmless to mammals.

The one precaution: keep pets off the treated area until any dust from application has settled. Once the product is watered into the soil, there’s no meaningful exposure risk. This is a good middle-ground option if nematodes feel too finicky or if you want something with a longer shelf life.

Chlorantraniliprole: The Lowest-Risk Chemical

If you prefer a conventional grub preventer, chlorantraniliprole is the standout for pet safety. The EPA classifies it as a “reduced-risk pesticide,” and the National Pesticide Information Center reports it has “very low toxicity” across every exposure route: oral, skin contact, and inhalation. The EPA has stated there is “no evidence of chlorantraniliprole toxicity” to mammals, and it’s classified as “not likely to be carcinogenic.”

Chlorantraniliprole works by targeting muscle function in insects through a pathway that simply doesn’t operate the same way in mammals. It’s available in granular formulations sold under several brand names at garden centers. One practical note: granular products can look and smell interesting to dogs. Keep your pet inside until the granules are fully watered into the soil and no visible pellets remain on the surface. Dogs that eat granules aren’t likely to be poisoned, but ingesting any foreign material in quantity can cause stomach upset.

This product works best as a preventive, applied in spring or early summer before grubs hatch and begin feeding on roots.

Milky Spore: Effective but Limited

Milky spore disease (Paenibacillus popilliae) is another biological option that’s completely safe for pets. It’s a bacterium applied to the soil that infects and kills grub larvae. The limitation is significant, though: it only works on Japanese beetle grubs. University of Illinois Extension research confirms it has “virtually no activity on other grub species.” If Japanese beetles are your primary problem, milky spore can provide years of control once established. If you’re dealing with masked chafers or other species, it won’t help.

Chemicals That Pose Real Risk to Pets

Not all grub killers are created equal. Some older and more common active ingredients carry genuine toxicity concerns for dogs and cats.

Imidacloprid, a neonicotinoid found in several grub control products, interferes with nerve signaling. While its binding affinity is lower in mammals than insects, pets that ingest it can show symptoms within 15 minutes, including drooling, vomiting, and excessive tearing. These signs typically resolve within 24 hours, but lethal doses can cause death in the same timeframe. Skin contact has also caused dermatitis and hypersensitivity reactions in companion animals.

Trichlorfon and carbaryl are organophosphate and carbamate insecticides, respectively, that work by disrupting the nervous system in a way that affects mammals more broadly. These products are effective grub killers but carry higher toxicity risks, particularly for dogs that eat grass or lick their paws after walking on treated lawns.

If a product label lists any of these active ingredients, treat it as a higher-risk choice for a household with pets.

How Long to Keep Pets Off Treated Lawns

Re-entry timing depends on the product type, not just the active ingredient.

  • Liquid applications need to dry completely before pets return. In warm, sunny conditions, that takes about two hours. Overcast or humid days can extend drying time.
  • Granular products require two steps: water the granules into the soil thoroughly, then wait for the surface to dry again. If you can still see pellets sitting on the grass, the lawn isn’t ready. Dogs are especially drawn to granules because many have a smell worth investigating.
  • Soil-drench treatments (products targeting underground pests) also need to be watered in before they activate. Pets should stay off until the surface is dry and no visible residue remains.
  • Biological products like nematodes and milky spore have no chemical re-entry concerns, though nematodes do need moisture to survive, so you’ll be irrigating frequently regardless.

Always check the specific product label. Some extend the re-entry window beyond what general guidelines suggest.

Timing Your Application for Best Results

Grub control timing matters as much as product choice. White grubs follow a predictable life cycle: adult beetles lay eggs in the soil during early to midsummer, eggs hatch into small larvae by late summer, and those larvae feed on grass roots through fall before burrowing deeper to overwinter.

Preventive products like chlorantraniliprole work best when applied in spring or early summer, before eggs hatch. You’re putting a barrier in the soil that kills larvae as they emerge. Curative treatments, including nematodes and Bt galleriae, should go down in late summer when young grubs are actively feeding in the top few inches of soil. This is when they’re smallest, most vulnerable, and closest to the surface. Michigan State University Extension notes that nematodes can be applied anytime from April through October when grubs are present, but late summer gives the best results in most regions.

For nematodes specifically, soil temperature is the deciding factor. Wait until the soil consistently reads above 68°F. A simple soil thermometer pushed a few inches into the ground will tell you what you need to know.

Choosing the Right Option for Your Yard

Your best pick depends on how severe the grub problem is and how much effort you’re willing to invest. Beneficial nematodes offer the highest safety margin and work on multiple grub species, but they need careful handling and consistent moisture. Chlorantraniliprole is the most convenient option with an excellent safety profile for pets, available as a simple granular application. Bt galleriae splits the difference as a microbial product that’s easier to store than live nematodes but still very low risk.

If you’re unsure which grub species you’re dealing with, pull back a square foot of damaged turf and count the larvae. More than 10 grubs per square foot generally warrants treatment. Fewer than that, and a healthy lawn can often tolerate the damage on its own, no products needed.
