Grasshoppers in Arizona: Common Types, Damage, and Control

Arizona’s warm, arid climate supports a wide variety of grasshoppers, from small species barely an inch long to striking, toxic giants that look like they belong in a nature documentary. Whether you’re trying to identify one you spotted in your yard or figuring out how to keep them from eating your garden, here’s what you need to know about grasshoppers in the Grand Canyon State.

Common Grasshopper Types in Arizona

Arizona is home to dozens of grasshopper species spread across its deserts, grasslands, and mountain foothills. Most fall into a few broad categories. Slant-faced grasshoppers are common in grassy areas and tend to feed on native grasses rather than garden plants. Band-winged grasshoppers, recognizable by the colorful flash of their hindwings during flight, are widespread across rocky desert terrain. Spur-throated grasshoppers are the group most likely to show up in yards and agricultural fields, as many species in this family are generalist feeders happy to munch on vegetable gardens, ornamental plants, and crops.

Populations fluctuate dramatically from year to year depending on rainfall and temperature. A wet winter and spring can trigger large hatches, while prolonged drought keeps numbers in check. In boom years, grasshoppers can appear in enormous numbers across southern and central Arizona, particularly in late summer during monsoon season when vegetation is lush.

The Horse Lubber: Arizona’s Most Recognizable Grasshopper

The horse lubber is the grasshopper most people notice first. Found in the Chihuahuan Desert region of southeastern Arizona, it’s one of the largest grasshoppers in the United States. Females reach up to 2.8 inches long and can weigh around 9 grams, while males are slightly smaller at up to 2.3 inches. Their shiny black bodies marked with bright yellow patterning, green-veined forewings, and vivid red hindwings make them almost impossible to miss.

That bold appearance is a warning. Horse lubbers are toxic. Their tissues contain a mix of defensive chemicals, some synthesized internally and others concentrated from the plants they eat, including acacia, yucca, and ephedra shrubs. When a predator attacks, the grasshopper sprays a foul-smelling secretion from breathing pores on its thorax, producing a hissing sound and surrounding itself in a noxious chemical cloud. The secretion has a distinctive coffee-vanilla odor. If a predator ignores these warnings and eats one anyway, the result is vomiting or, in smaller animals, death.

Horse lubbers also put on a visual threat display: turning sideways, spreading their red hindwings, and waving their spiny hind legs and bright orange-tipped antennae. Their black coloration isn’t just for show either. They use it to absorb heat efficiently, helping them warm up quickly in the cool desert mornings. While most horse lubbers in the U.S. are black with yellow markings, Arizona occasionally produces rare color variants that are mostly yellowish, orange, or greenish.

When and Where They’re Most Active

Grasshopper activity in Arizona follows a seasonal pattern tied to heat and moisture. Eggs laid in soil the previous fall begin hatching in spring as temperatures climb, producing tiny nymphs that go through five or six growth stages before reaching adulthood. By June and July, you’ll start seeing full-sized adults. The monsoon season, roughly mid-June through September, brings the peak of grasshopper activity. The combination of warmth and sudden moisture triggers plant growth, giving grasshoppers abundant food and ideal breeding conditions.

In urban and suburban areas, grasshoppers are drawn to irrigated landscapes. If you water your lawn or garden in an otherwise dry neighborhood, you’re essentially creating an oasis. Expect to see more grasshoppers near green vegetation, especially along edges where irrigated yards meet natural desert.

Damage to Gardens and Landscapes

Most native grasshoppers in Arizona prefer wild grasses and desert shrubs and won’t bother your garden. The species that do cause damage tend to be generalist feeders, chewing irregular holes in leaves, stripping stems, and sometimes eating flowers and fruit. Young transplants and seedlings are especially vulnerable because a few grasshoppers can consume an entire small plant overnight.

The damage looks different from what caterpillars or beetles produce. Grasshoppers chew from leaf edges inward, leaving ragged, uneven margins rather than clean holes. You’ll often find frass (small dark droppings) on leaves and around the base of plants. In most years, the damage is cosmetic and tolerable. In outbreak years, large populations can defoliate garden beds and young trees surprisingly fast.

How to Manage Grasshoppers in Your Yard

Effective grasshopper management follows an integrated approach: identify what you’re dealing with, then layer multiple strategies rather than relying on a single fix.

Physical barriers are the simplest first step. Floating row covers or fine mesh netting draped over vegetable beds block grasshoppers from reaching plants entirely. This works especially well for raised beds and smaller garden plots. For individual young trees or shrubs, a cylinder of window screen around the trunk and lower branches can prevent feeding damage during peak season.

Biological control offers a longer-term option. A naturally occurring pathogen called Nosema locustae is sold as a bait product specifically targeting grasshoppers. You spread it through the habitat where grasshoppers are foraging, and they consume it along with their regular food. The key limitation is timing: it only works well when applied during early nymph stages in spring, before grasshoppers reach adulthood. It also needs to be reapplied after rain or sprinkler irrigation, since moisture breaks down the bait. Nosema doesn’t produce a dramatic overnight kill. Instead, it slowly weakens and reduces the population over weeks, and infected grasshoppers that get eaten by healthy ones spread the pathogen further.

Encouraging natural predators helps too. Birds, lizards, roadrunners, and predatory insects like robber flies all feed on grasshoppers. Maintaining habitat diversity in your yard, such as native shrubs, rock features, and avoiding broad-spectrum pesticide use, keeps these predators around. In rural areas, chickens and guinea fowl are famously enthusiastic grasshopper hunters.

Chemical treatments are a last resort for severe infestations. If grasshoppers are overwhelming your garden despite other measures, insecticidal sprays applied directly to plants can reduce feeding. Focus applications on the plants you want to protect rather than spraying broadly across the landscape, which kills beneficial insects along with the grasshoppers. Treat in the early morning when grasshoppers are sluggish and easier to target.

Grasshoppers vs. Locusts in Arizona

Arizona doesn’t experience true locust swarms. Locusts are specific grasshopper species that undergo a behavioral and physical transformation when populations get dense enough, forming massive migratory swarms. No grasshopper species currently found in Arizona exhibits this swarming behavior. The large numbers you sometimes see during wet years are simply a population boom of ordinary grasshoppers, not a locust event. They’ll feed locally and decline as conditions dry out, without forming coordinated swarms that travel long distances.
