Found Dead Termites in Your House? Here’s What to Do

Dead termites inside your house are almost always swarmers, the winged reproductive members of a colony that emerged indoors, lost their wings, and died because they couldn’t reach moist soil. Finding them is not a minor event. It typically signals an active termite colony feeding on or very near your home, one that has been growing for several years and is now mature enough to produce these winged adults.

The dead insects themselves pose no threat, but the colony that produced them will continue feeding on wood unless it’s treated. Here’s how to read the evidence, confirm what you’re looking at, and figure out your next steps.

Why Dead Termites Appear Indoors

Termite colonies send out swarmers once they reach a certain size, usually after several years of growth. These winged termites leave the colony in large numbers to mate and start new colonies elsewhere. When a colony is living inside or beneath a building, the swarmers often emerge indoors, drawn toward windows and light fixtures. They shed their wings quickly and die within hours because they can’t reach the soil they need to survive.

What you’ll typically find is a scattering of small, dark-bodied insects on windowsills, near doors, or around light sources, often accompanied by a pile of identical translucent wings. Sometimes you’ll see only the wings with no insect bodies attached.

The number of dead swarmers matters. A few dozen could mean outside termites were drawn to your lights during swarm season and entered through gaps in doors or windows. Hundreds of dead swarmers inside your home point strongly to an active infestation in the structure itself, regardless of any past treatments.

Make Sure They’re Actually Termites

Dead termite swarmers are frequently confused with flying ants, which also swarm in warm weather. The differences are easy to spot once you know what to look for:

  • Body shape: Termites have a straight, tube-like body with no visible waist. Ants have a pinched “wasp waist” between the thorax and abdomen.
  • Wings: Termite wings are pale, translucent, and all roughly the same length. Ant wings are tinted brown, and the front pair is noticeably longer than the back pair.
  • Antennae: Termite antennae are straight. Ant antennae bend at an angle.

If you’re unsure, save a few specimens in a plastic bag or jar. A pest control inspector can identify them in seconds, and having a sample saves time.

Look for Other Signs of Damage

Dead swarmers alone tell you a colony exists nearby, but other physical evidence can reveal what type of termites you’re dealing with and how extensive the problem is.

Drywood Termite Evidence

Drywood termites live entirely inside the wood they eat, with no ground contact. Their most distinctive calling card is frass: tiny, hard, six-sided pellets about the size of poppy seeds or coarse coffee grounds. The pellets range from pale tan to dark brown depending on the wood being consumed, and they accumulate in small piles beneath tiny “kick-out” holes in baseboards, window sills, or wooden furniture. Most homeowners initially mistake frass for sawdust or sand.

Subterranean Termite Evidence

Subterranean termites nest in the ground and travel up to their food source. They build mud tubes, pencil-thick tunnels made of soil, saliva, and feces, that run along foundations, basement walls, or the inside of crawl spaces. These tubes are typically a quarter-inch to one inch wide, light to dark brown, and feel gritty to the touch. Subterranean termites don’t leave visible droppings the way drywood termites do.

Check your foundation walls, crawl space, garage, and any areas where wood meets concrete. Tap exposed wood with a screwdriver handle. Hollow-sounding wood or wood that crumbles easily suggests feeding damage beneath the surface.

Dead Termites After a Recent Treatment

If your home was recently treated for termites, finding dead swarmers doesn’t necessarily mean the treatment failed. Post-treatment swarms can occur for up to about four weeks after an effective treatment. Swarmers are hardier than worker termites and can survive in drier conditions inside the colony even after the workers have been killed. A weakened colony may still produce one last batch of swarmers before it collapses entirely.

That said, if you’re seeing large numbers of dead swarmers more than a month after treatment, it’s worth contacting your pest control provider to reassess. Most termite treatment contracts include follow-up inspections for exactly this reason.

What Professional Treatment Looks Like

The type of treatment depends on the species. Subterranean termites are typically handled with liquid treatments applied to the soil around and beneath the foundation, creating a chemical barrier the colony can’t cross without exposure. These are sometimes called tentless treatments and generally cost $3 to $16 per linear foot of foundation.

Drywood termites often require fumigation, where the entire house is sealed under a tent and filled with gas that penetrates the wood. Fumigation runs roughly $1 to $3 per square foot of living space. For a small, localized drywood infestation, spot treatments are sometimes an option at lower cost.

Overall, termite treatment costs range widely. A small, contained problem might run a few hundred dollars. A severe infestation in a large home can exceed $6,000.

Reducing the Risk Going Forward

Termites need wood, moisture, and soil access. Removing any one of those makes your home a harder target.

Keep all wood components of your home, including siding, door frames, and window frames, at least six inches above ground level. Pull soil and mulch back from the foundation so wood never contacts dirt directly. If you use mulch in landscaping beds near the house, keep it to a couple of inches and don’t let it touch wood siding or framing.

Moisture is the other major attractant. Make sure gutters and downspouts direct water away from the foundation. Fix leaking faucets, pipes, and air conditioning drip lines. Grade the soil around your home so surface water flows away from the building rather than pooling against it. In crawl spaces, ensure vents are clear of debris and vegetation, and cover at least 75 percent of the exposed soil with polyethylene sheeting to reduce humidity.

Never stack firewood, lumber, or cardboard boxes against the foundation or inside a crawl space. Remove old tree stumps and dead roots near the building when practical. Dense vines or ivy growing against exterior walls can also hide termite entry points and should be trimmed back or removed.
