Fly Predators Explained: Do They Actually Work?

Fly predators are tiny parasitoid wasps that kill pest flies before they hatch. They work by laying their eggs inside fly pupae (the cocoon stage between maggot and adult fly), destroying the developing fly in the process. You sprinkle them near manure areas once a month during warm weather, and they get to work finding fly pupae on their own. They don’t sting, don’t bite, and are so small most people never notice them.

How Fly Predators Actually Work

The term “fly predators” is a bit of a misnomer. These insects are technically parasitoids, not predators. Instead of hunting adult flies, they target the pupal stage, which is the hard-shelled casing a maggot forms before emerging as an adult fly. A female wasp finds a fly pupa, drills into it, and lays her eggs inside. Her offspring feed on the developing fly, killing it, then emerge as adults and immediately start searching for more pupae to parasitize. The cycle repeats continuously as long as conditions are warm enough.

Several species are sold commercially, each with slightly different strengths. Spalangia nigroaenea is the most effective against both house flies and stable flies in feedlot settings. Muscidifurax raptor and Muscidifurax zaraptor target house flies specifically, while Spalangia cameroni and Spalangia endius lean more toward stable flies. Most commercial suppliers ship a mix of species to cover a range of fly types on your property.

What They Target and What They Ignore

Fly predators only attack flies. They don’t go after butterflies, bees, beetles, or any other insects. They’re also completely harmless to people, horses, cattle, dogs, and any other animals on your property. At roughly 1 to 3 millimeters long, they’re smaller than a grain of rice, and they stay close to the ground near manure and breeding sites rather than flying around at face level. You’re unlikely to see them at all unless you’re looking.

Their primary targets are the flies that breed in animal manure: house flies, stable flies, and horn flies. They won’t do much against deer flies, horse flies, or other species that breed in wet soil or water rather than manure. If biting flies from nearby woods or wetlands are your main problem, fly predators alone won’t solve it.

How Many You Need and When to Release

Spalding Labs, the largest commercial supplier, recommends one standard pouch per five horses per month, priced at around $26 delivered. For larger operations with cattle, goats, or poultry, quantities scale up based on animal count and the amount of manure produced. No property is too small or too large for them.

Releases happen every three to four weeks during warm months, typically spring through fall depending on your climate. Most suppliers offer subscription programs that automatically ship a new batch on schedule. When your shipment arrives, you wait until the wasps begin hatching inside the bag (you’ll see tiny insects moving around), then spend a few minutes sprinkling them in shaded, moist areas near manure piles, compost bins, or anywhere flies breed. That’s the entire time commitment per month.

Timing matters. Starting early in the season, before fly populations explode, gives the wasps a chance to build up their numbers alongside the flies rather than trying to catch up later. If you wait until mid-summer when flies are already thick, it takes longer to see results.

Realistic Expectations for Fly Reduction

Fly predators won’t eliminate every fly on your property. No single method will. What they do is suppress fly populations by destroying a portion of each generation before it can emerge. Over several release cycles, the cumulative effect becomes noticeable: fewer flies landing on your animals, less swarming around barn doors, and a gradual improvement that builds through the season.

The degree of control depends heavily on what else you’re doing. Fly predators work best as one piece of an integrated approach. Manure management is the single biggest factor in fly populations. Dragging pastures to break up and dry out manure pats, composting stall waste properly, and removing standing water all reduce the breeding sites flies depend on. Combining these sanitation practices with fly predators produces much better results than relying on either approach alone. Both organic and conventional operations can use this combination.

Using Fly Predators With Chemical Treatments

Because fly predators are living insects, pesticides can kill them just as easily as they kill pest flies. This is the most common reason people don’t see results: they release beneficial wasps and then spray the barn with insecticide, wiping out both pests and predators at once.

Broad-spectrum insecticides in the organophosphate, carbamate, and pyrethroid classes are especially problematic. These chemicals can persist in the environment for four months or longer, continuing to kill beneficial insects long after application. If you’ve been using products in these classes, you need to stop well before your first fly predator release to give residues time to break down.

Some targeted treatments are more compatible. Fly traps, sticky tapes, and spot-on treatments applied directly to animals generally don’t harm wasps working at ground level in manure areas. Feed-through fly control products (which pass through the animal and into manure to kill maggots) can potentially reduce the number of pupae available for wasps to parasitize, so the interaction there is worth considering. If you want to use any chemical fly control alongside predators, talk to your supplier about which products have short enough residual effects to coexist with beneficial insects.

Best Situations for Fly Predators

Fly predators are most effective on properties where animals are kept in relatively contained areas: horse farms with barns and paddocks, cattle feedlots, dairy operations, and backyard poultry setups. These are situations where manure accumulates in predictable locations, giving the wasps concentrated areas to work. Properties with animals spread across hundreds of acres of open range present more of a challenge, since fly breeding sites are scattered widely.

They’re also a particularly good fit for properties near neighbors, where spraying insecticides creates friction, or for operations pursuing organic certification where synthetic pesticides aren’t an option. The cost is modest compared to chemical programs, and there’s no withdrawal period, no chemical residue on animals, and no risk of flies developing resistance the way they do with repeated insecticide use.

For most small to mid-size livestock operations, fly predators combined with good manure management and targeted trapping provide a level of fly control that’s comparable to chemical programs, without the downsides of pesticide resistance, environmental contamination, or harm to beneficial insect populations already present on your land.
