Combat bait stations, on the other hand, performed poorly compared to everything else in the study.
The real advantage of professional-grade products isn’t always a higher kill rate in a lab setting. It’s formulation stability, longer residual effectiveness, and the ability to apply precise amounts in targeted locations. Professional gel baits maintain their moisture and attractiveness longer than consumer gels, which tend to dry out and stop working within a few weeks. Dehydrating Dusts for Hard-to-Reach Areas

Boric acid powder works similarly but through ingestion. Roaches groom the powder off their legs and antennae, swallowing it in the process. It damages the gut lining and also has some dehydrating action. Boric acid is inexpensive and widely available, but it loses effectiveness when it gets wet and can be messy to apply.

German cockroaches, the species responsible for most indoor infestations, have developed a remarkable defense against bait products. In normal roaches, glucose (a sugar commonly used in bait formulations, often as corn syrup) triggers the taste neurons responsible for detecting sweetness. The result: a glucose-averse roach tastes bait and perceives it as bitter, causing it to close its mouth and run. This trait is heritable, so it spreads through the population over generations. This is why exterminators rotate between active ingredients and bait matrices. If one product stops working, switching to a bait with a different sugar base or a different toxin can overcome the aversion. Homeowners dealing with a stubborn infestation should do the same. If you’re using liquid concentrate sprays, remove pet food bowls, water dishes, toys, and bedding from the area before application. Putting Together an Effective Treatment Plan

Under sinks, behind the stove, along cabinet hinges, and near plumbing penetrations are high-priority spots. Apply dust lightly in enclosed voids using a hand duster. The key word is lightly: roaches will avoid thick piles of dust. You want a barely visible film.
Don’t spray insecticide in the same areas where you’ve placed bait. Repellent sprays will keep roaches away from the bait, undermining the entire strategy. If you feel the need to spray, limit it to entry points like door thresholds and window frames, well away from bait placements.
Expect to see increased roach activity in the first few days after baiting. Dying roaches become disoriented and wander into the open, which can look like the problem is getting worse. This is actually a sign the bait is working. Significant population reduction typically takes one to two weeks, with full colony elimination taking three to four weeks depending on the size of the infestation. If you’re still seeing live roaches after a month, switch to a product with a different active ingredient to address possible resistance or bait aversion.
