Ortho Home Defense does kill fleas. The product’s active ingredient, bifenthrin, is a pyrethroid insecticide that attacks the flea’s nervous system on contact, causing paralysis and death. It’s listed as a target pest on the EPA-registered label, and the product can be used to spot-treat infested areas indoors. That said, Ortho Home Defense alone is unlikely to solve a full flea infestation, and understanding its strengths and limitations will save you weeks of frustration.
How It Kills Fleas
Bifenthrin works by interfering with sodium channels in the flea’s nervous system. Normally, these channels open and close rapidly to transmit nerve signals. Bifenthrin holds them open longer than they should be, which floods the nervous system with uncontrolled signals. The flea loses the ability to coordinate its muscles, becomes paralyzed, and dies. This happens on contact, meaning a flea that walks across a treated surface picks up a lethal dose through its body.
Where and How to Apply It
The product label directs you to spot-treat specific areas rather than broadcast it across entire rooms. For fleas, that means targeting pet resting quarters, localized sections of flooring (carpet, rugs, tile, vinyl, hardwood), and anywhere fleas are actively present. You can also treat baseboards, door frames, window frames, and other entry points to create a barrier.
Before spraying, vacuum the entire area thoroughly. Vacuuming physically removes adult fleas, larvae, eggs, and flea dirt from carpet fibers and cracks in flooring. This step alone dramatically reduces the population you’re asking the spray to handle. After treatment, replace your pet’s old bedding with fresh bedding.
What It Won’t Do on Its Own
Here’s the catch: only about 5% of a flea infestation consists of adult fleas. The rest is eggs, larvae, and pupae hiding in carpet fibers, furniture crevices, and floor cracks. Bifenthrin kills adults and larvae it contacts, but it doesn’t contain an insect growth regulator (IGR), which is the ingredient that prevents flea eggs from hatching and larvae from maturing into biting adults.
The University of Kentucky’s entomology department notes that the most effective flea sprays combine an adulticide (like bifenthrin or permethrin) with an IGR such as methoprene or pyriproxyfen, which halts egg and larval development for several months. Without that second ingredient, new fleas keep emerging from eggs already laid in your carpet, and you end up re-treating over and over. Some Ortho Home Defense formulations do include an IGR. Check your specific product’s label for methoprene or pyriproxyfen in the active ingredients list. If yours doesn’t contain one, consider pairing it with a standalone IGR product.
The product label itself makes another critical point: pets living in the treated home must also be treated with a flea product registered for use on animals. An environmental spray handles fleas in the house, but if your dog or cat is still carrying fleas, they’ll reintroduce them continuously. Treating the home without treating the pet is like mopping the floor while the faucet is running.
How Long the Protection Lasts
When applied to indoor, non-porous surfaces like baseboards and tile, Ortho Home Defense is marketed to provide residual control for up to 12 months. On porous surfaces like carpet, the residual life is shorter because the fibers absorb the product. For active flea problems on flooring and carpet, you may need to reapply, especially if you’re vacuuming frequently (which you should be, since vacuuming is one of the most effective physical controls for fleas).
Keep in mind that flea pupae are essentially immune to insecticides. They’re sealed inside a sticky cocoon that chemicals can’t penetrate. Pupae can sit dormant for weeks or even months before hatching. This is why people often see a second wave of fleas after they thought the problem was solved. Continued vacuuming helps because the vibrations and warmth trigger pupae to emerge, exposing them to treated surfaces.
Safety Around Pets
The label allows people and pets to re-enter treated areas once the spray has fully dried. But “safe after drying” deserves some nuance, particularly if you have cats.
Dogs generally tolerate pyrethroids well, and the dried residue poses low risk for most dogs. A dog that habitually licks or chews baseboards is at somewhat higher risk, but reactions are usually minor and temporary.
Cats are a different story. They lack a key liver enzyme needed to break down pyrethroids efficiently. Because Ortho Home Defense is designed to leave an active residual film on surfaces for months, a cat that repeatedly walks along treated baseboards, rests against them, or grooms its paws after crossing a treated surface gets ongoing low-level exposure. Signs of pyrethroid sensitivity in cats include drooling, paw flicking, ear or skin twitching, vomiting, and in more serious cases, tremors or incoordination.
To minimize risk with any pet in the home:
- Remove pets before spraying. Move animals, small-mammal enclosures, and fish tanks (or cover them) out of the room before you apply.
- Spray targeted bands only. Treat baseboards, cracks, and entry points as directed. Never spray open floor areas where pets lie, pet bedding, or feeding areas.
- Ventilate before pets return. Open windows and let the treated room air out until surfaces are visibly dry.
- Limit ongoing contact with treated surfaces. Discourage cats and small animals from resting against or repeatedly walking on treated baseboards throughout the months-long residual period.
Getting Rid of Fleas Completely
Ortho Home Defense is a useful piece of a flea control plan, but it works best as one layer in a multi-step approach. A complete strategy looks like this: treat every pet in the household with a veterinary flea product, vacuum all floors and upholstered furniture every two to three days for at least two weeks, wash pet bedding in hot water, and apply an indoor insecticide that ideally includes both an adulticide and an IGR. Treating outdoor areas where pets rest (shaded spots near the house, under porches) can also cut off reinfestation from the yard.
Expect the process to take two to four weeks at minimum, sometimes longer. That timeline accounts for the pupae that are already in your carpet waiting to hatch. Consistency with vacuuming and pet treatment during that window matters more than any single spray application.
