Clove oil can kill bed bugs on direct contact, but it falls far short of eliminating an infestation on its own. The active compound, eugenol, suppresses the bed bug nervous system, effectively shutting down electrical activity and killing the insect. That sounds promising in theory, yet laboratory testing shows that commercial products containing clove oil produce inconsistent and often disappointing results, especially under real-world conditions where bugs hide in cracks, folds, and clutter.
How Clove Oil Kills Bed Bugs
Eugenol, the primary active compound in clove oil, works by depressing the bed bug’s nervous system. Researchers at Purdue University measured spontaneous electrical activity in bed bug nerve tissue and found that eugenol produced clear neuroinhibitory effects, essentially slowing and stopping the signals that keep the insect alive. This mechanism is similar to what two other essential oil compounds (thymol from thyme and carvacrol from oregano) do, though eugenol is the one most associated with clove.
The catch is that this only happens with direct, sustained contact. Eugenol doesn’t leave behind a lasting toxic residue the way conventional pesticides do. Once the oil dries or dissipates, any bed bug that walks across the treated surface is unlikely to be harmed. This means you’d need to spray every single bug directly, which is nearly impossible given how well they hide.
What the Lab Tests Actually Show
Researchers at Rutgers University tested several commercial bed bug sprays containing essential oils, including clove oil, under controlled laboratory conditions where bugs were forced into contact with the products. Even in that best-case scenario, most products performed poorly.
A product called Bed Bug Patrol, containing clove oil (0.003%), peppermint oil, and sodium lauryl sulfate, achieved about 91 to 92 percent mortality, but only after 10 full days. At the three-day mark, it hadn’t reached 75 percent. Another product, Bed Bug Bully, with a higher clove oil concentration of 0.3% alongside mint, citronella, and rosemary oils, managed only 60 percent mortality after 10 days. Several other products containing eugenol at 0.3 to 0.5 percent killed fewer than half the bed bugs after 10 days.
These numbers deserve context. In a lab, the bugs have nowhere to escape the product. In your bedroom, bed bugs retreat into mattress seams, behind baseboards, inside electrical outlets, and under furniture. The real-world kill rate would be significantly lower than anything seen in controlled testing.
No Repellent Effect
One common hope is that even if clove oil doesn’t kill every bug, the strong smell might keep them away. The Rutgers research found no repellent effect from any of the essential oil products tested. Bed bugs locate humans by detecting the carbon dioxide we exhale, and nothing in the tested materials deterred them when CO2 was present. Spraying clove oil around your bed won’t create a protective barrier.
It Won’t Kill Eggs
Bed bug eggs are one of the biggest challenges in any treatment plan. They’re tiny, tucked into hidden crevices, and protected by a shell that resists many treatments. The research on essential oil products focused on adult and nymph mortality, and even direct-contact killing of adults proved difficult. Without the ability to eliminate eggs, any treatment using clove oil alone would leave the next generation ready to hatch and restart the cycle within one to two weeks.
Safety Concerns for Pets and People
Clove oil is classified by the EPA as a “minimum risk” pesticide under section 25(b) of federal pesticide law, meaning it doesn’t require the full registration and review process that conventional pesticides do. That classification reflects low risk to humans at typical concentrations, but it doesn’t mean the oil is harmless in all situations.
Undiluted clove oil can irritate skin, and inhaling concentrated vapors in an enclosed bedroom isn’t ideal, particularly for people with asthma or respiratory sensitivity. The bigger concern is pets. Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine lists clove leaf oil as toxic to animals. Oral ingestion can cause vomiting, diarrhea, decreased heart and breathing rate, and even seizures in large doses. Cats and dogs that walk across treated surfaces may ingest the oil during self-grooming, so any indoor application around pets carries real risk.
Why Professionals Don’t Rely on It
Cornell University’s StopPests in Housing program, which advises on pest management in residential settings, has pointed out a fundamental problem with essential oil sprays: because they rely entirely on direct contact, they’re functionally no better than squishing bugs with a vacuum, a steamer, or even a shoe. If you have to physically reach each bug for the product to work, the oil itself isn’t adding much.
Professional bed bug treatment typically combines multiple approaches: thorough inspection, vacuuming, steam treatment, sealing entry points, reducing clutter, installing mattress encasements, and targeted application of residual pesticides that continue killing bugs for weeks after application. That residual activity is exactly what clove oil lacks. An exterminator’s treatment keeps working long after the visit. Clove oil stops working as soon as it dries.
If You Still Want to Use It
Clove oil isn’t useless. If you spot a live bed bug and spray it directly with a eugenol-based product, it will likely die. As a spot-kill tool while you arrange professional treatment, it’s a reasonable option. Some people also use it as part of a DIY routine alongside laundering all bedding on high heat, encasing mattresses, and vacuuming thoroughly and frequently.
What it cannot do is replace a comprehensive treatment plan. Bed bugs reproduce quickly, hide expertly, and can survive months without feeding. Killing the handful you can see while dozens more remain hidden in walls, furniture joints, and carpet edges won’t resolve the problem. The most effective commercial products in the Rutgers study still left 8 to 10 percent of bugs alive under ideal lab conditions, and real apartments are far less ideal than a petri dish.
If you’re dealing with more than a few stray bugs, the realistic path to elimination involves professional inspection and a multi-step treatment plan. Clove oil can be one small tool in that process, but expecting it to solve the problem on its own will cost you time, and bed bug populations grow fast when time is wasted.
