LED lights do not attract silverfish. Silverfish are photophobic, meaning they actively avoid light and seek out dark environments. Unlike moths, beetles, and flies that navigate toward light sources, silverfish rely on darkness to find food and shelter. If anything, keeping your lights on is more likely to deter them than draw them in.
The confusion is understandable. Many insects are famously attracted to lights, and people who spot silverfish near a bathroom light fixture or kitchen LED strip may assume the light is the culprit. But silverfish are almost certainly there for other reasons entirely.
Why Silverfish Show Up Near Lights
If you’re seeing silverfish near a light source, the light isn’t what brought them. Silverfish need three things to thrive: high humidity, warmth, and food. They require humidity levels above 75 percent to survive and prefer temperatures between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and garages check both boxes, and those rooms also happen to have light fixtures.
Silverfish eat carbohydrates and protein. Their diet includes flour, rolled oats, starches in cardboard, paper, book bindings, glue, insulation, dried meat, and dead insects. A damp bathroom with wallpaper paste or a humid kitchen pantry with flour and cereal boxes is a silverfish buffet. The light in that room is irrelevant to them.
Older incandescent bulbs and halogen fixtures generate significant heat, which can warm the areas around them and create cozy microclimates that silverfish appreciate. LEDs run much cooler by comparison, so they don’t even offer that indirect warmth benefit. Switching from incandescent to LED lighting removes one small environmental factor that could make a space more hospitable to pests.
What Actually Attracts Insects to LED Lights
Most insects that are drawn to artificial light respond to specific wavelengths. The biggest attractant range falls between 300 and 420 nanometers, which is ultraviolet light. Moths, mayflies, beetles, and mosquitoes are all strongly attracted to UV and blue light wavelengths. Visible blue light (421 to 495 nanometers) also pulls in beetles and mosquitoes at high rates.
Silverfish don’t follow this pattern. They don’t navigate by light the way flying insects do. While a moth uses light for orientation and can get trapped circling a bulb, silverfish have no such behavior. They scatter when exposed to light, which is why you typically see them dart away when you flip on a switch or open a cabinet.
LED Color Temperature and General Pest Prevention
Even though LEDs won’t attract silverfish regardless of color, choosing the right color temperature can reduce the flying insects that cluster around your lights, particularly outdoors. Cool white LEDs (above 4000K) emit more blue-spectrum light and attract noticeably more bugs. Warm white LEDs (below 3000K) shift toward yellow and red wavelengths that most insects have difficulty seeing.
According to researchers at the University of Florida’s extension program, the most effective LEDs for reducing insect attraction are those labeled “warm white” or “ultra warm white,” with a color temperature below 3600K and wavelengths above 550 nanometers. Amber-toned LEDs, around 2000K or lower, emit virtually no blue light and attract the fewest insects of any option. If you’re dealing with moths, flies, or mosquitoes gathering around porch lights or outdoor fixtures, swapping to a warm or amber LED bulb is a simple fix.
How to Actually Keep Silverfish Away
Since light isn’t the issue, controlling silverfish comes down to managing their real attractants. Reducing indoor humidity is the single most effective step. A dehumidifier in damp basements, proper ventilation in bathrooms (running the exhaust fan during and after showers), and fixing any leaky pipes will make your home far less hospitable to them. Aim to keep indoor humidity well below 75 percent, ideally in the 40 to 60 percent range.
Remove their food sources where possible. Store flour, oats, cereal, and other dry goods in sealed containers rather than open boxes. Clear out stacks of old newspapers, magazines, and cardboard boxes, especially in storage areas like attics, basements, and garages. Wallpaper paste, book bindings, and the glue on cardboard are all fair game for silverfish, so reducing clutter in humid spaces limits their options.
Sealing entry points helps too. Caulk cracks around baseboards, window frames, and pipes where silverfish travel between rooms or enter from outside. Because they prefer tight, dark hiding spots during the day, reducing the number of undisturbed crevices in your home forces them into the open where they’re less comfortable and easier to spot.
Bright lighting won’t eliminate a silverfish problem on its own, but their photophobic nature means a well-lit room is genuinely less attractive to them than a dark one. Combining good lighting with humidity control and food source removal addresses the actual reasons silverfish chose your home in the first place.
