Dryer sheets do not repel spiders in any meaningful way. Despite being one of the most popular home remedies shared online, there is no scientific evidence that placing dryer sheets around your house keeps spiders away. The idea persists because dryer sheets contain fragrant compounds, and people assume strong smells drive spiders off. In practice, the effect is negligible at best.
Why the Myth Sounds Believable
Dryer sheets release volatile compounds including linalool and citronellol. Linalool is toxic to many mites and insects, and citronellol is a known mosquito repellent. So it seems reasonable that these chemicals might bother spiders too. The problem is that toxicity to insects in a lab setting is very different from repelling spiders in your living room. Linalool has never been demonstrated as a repellent in controlled conditions, and spiders are not insects. They belong to an entirely separate class of animals (arachnids) and respond differently to chemical stimuli.
Entomologist Ron Harrison, formerly of Orkin, has called the dryer sheet claim a flat-out myth. His explanation for why it sometimes appears to work is simple: wiping a dryer sheet along baseboards and corners picks up dust and crumbs that attract the insects spiders feed on. You’re cleaning, not repelling.
How Spiders Actually Detect Smells
Spiders don’t have noses. They detect airborne chemicals through tiny structures called wall-pore sensilla located on their walking legs. Research published in 2024 found thousands of these sensors on spider legs, and they’re highly sensitive. Male wasp spiders responded to as little as 20 nanograms of a pheromone compound. So spiders can detect volatile chemicals in the air, but detecting a scent and being repelled by it are two different things. There’s no evidence that the specific fragrance cocktail in a dryer sheet triggers avoidance behavior in any spider species.
What Scents Do Repel Some Spiders
A few natural substances have shown genuine repellent effects in controlled lab tests, though results vary dramatically by species. In choice tests where spiders could move toward or away from a scent, brown widow spiders and European garden spiders avoided chestnut and peppermint oil more than 75 percent of the time. That’s a strong response, but it came with major caveats.
False widow spiders, another common household species, were completely unaffected by either oil. Lemon oil, which dominates online “natural spider repellent” lists, had no significant effect on any of the three species tested. The takeaway: even the most promising natural repellents work on some spiders and not others, and none have been validated as reliable whole-home solutions. Peppermint oil is a better bet than dryer sheets if you want to try a scent-based approach, but don’t expect it to clear your house of spiders.
Health Concerns with Scattering Dryer Sheets
Tucking dryer sheets into corners, closets, and under furniture means you’re continuously releasing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into your living space. A 2011 study published in Air Quality, Atmosphere & Health found that dryer sheets and scented laundry products emitted more than 25 VOCs, including acetaldehyde and benzene, both classified as carcinogenic. Seven of the detected compounds are classified by the EPA as hazardous air pollutants.
Separate research found that up to 12.5 percent of adults reported health effects from scented laundry product fumes, including asthma attacks, skin reactions, and migraines. Using dryer sheets as intended in a dryer with ventilation is one thing. Deliberately placing them around enclosed rooms as air fresheners or pest deterrents increases your exposure to these compounds for no proven benefit.
What Actually Keeps Spiders Out
Spiders enter homes for two reasons: shelter and food. The food is other insects. Every effective spider prevention strategy targets one or both of those factors.
- Seal entry points. Caulk gaps around pipes, wires, and window frames. If your home has weep holes in the brick, stuff them with copper mesh. Tighten the seals on doors and install window screens.
- Reduce outdoor lighting near doors. Standard white bulbs attract the flying insects spiders eat. Switching to sodium vapor or warm yellow bulbs near entryways draws fewer prey insects to your home’s perimeter.
- Trim vegetation. Branches and shrubs touching your exterior walls create a bridge for spiders to walk right up to (and into) your home. Keep plants pruned back from the structure.
- Vacuum regularly. This removes spiders, egg sacs, webbing, and the small insects that serve as their food supply. It’s the single most effective indoor control measure.
- Declutter storage areas. Spiders thrive in undisturbed boxes and piles. Use sealed plastic bins instead of cardboard, and tape the seams of any boxes you do keep.
- Use sticky traps. Placing glue traps along baseboards catches ground-dwelling spiders and doubles as a monitoring tool so you know which areas have the most activity.
None of these steps are as simple as tossing a dryer sheet behind the couch, but they address the actual reasons spiders are in your home. A spider doesn’t care what your house smells like if it’s full of flies and has easy entry points.
