DIY Spider Repellent Sprays That Actually Work

Most DIY spider repellents rely on strong-smelling substances that overwhelm spiders’ sensory systems. Unlike insects, spiders don’t have noses. They smell and taste through chemoreceptors on their legs and the small appendages near their mouths called pedipalps. Flooding those receptors with irritating compounds like menthol or acetic acid causes spiders to turn around and avoid the treated area. Here’s how to make the most effective versions at home.

Peppermint Oil Spray

Peppermint oil is the most popular DIY option, and it has some real science behind it. Menthol, the active compound in peppermint, overwhelms spider chemoreceptors on contact and through the air. In lab choice tests, brown widow spiders and European garden spiders avoided peppermint oil more than 75 percent of the time. That’s not a guarantee they’ll never cross a treated threshold, but it’s a meaningful deterrent for common household species.

The basic recipe is straightforward:

  • 2 cups of water
  • 15 to 30 drops of peppermint essential oil
  • A small squeeze of clear liquid dish soap

The dish soap matters. Oil and water don’t mix on their own, so without an emulsifier, the peppermint oil floats on top and you end up spraying mostly water. A few drops of dish soap breaks the oil into tiny droplets that stay suspended in the solution. Shake the bottle before each use anyway.

Spray along window sills, door frames, baseboards, and any cracks or gaps where spiders enter. Reapply every week or so, since the scent fades as the oil evaporates. Some people add cinnamon or eucalyptus oil (10 drops each) for a broader scent profile, though peppermint alone has the strongest evidence.

Why Results Vary

Not every spider species responds the same way. Those same lab tests found that false widow spiders were not significantly deterred by peppermint or chestnut oil. So if you’re dealing with a specific species that doesn’t seem bothered, it’s not necessarily that you made the spray wrong. Some spiders simply aren’t as sensitive to these compounds. You may need to combine peppermint spray with other methods listed below.

White Vinegar Spray

White vinegar works through a different mechanism: its strong acetic acid smell is intensely unpleasant to spiders. It’s cheaper than essential oils and available in every grocery store.

The standard ratio is 4 parts vinegar to 1 part water. Rentokil, a major pest control company, recommends an even stronger 8:2 mix. Pour it into a spray bottle and target the same areas: window sills, doorways, corners, and any crevices where you’ve seen webs or spiders.

The tradeoff is the smell. Vinegar dissipates faster than essential oils, so it needs more frequent reapplication, and your house will smell like vinegar for a while after each spraying. It can also damage natural stone countertops and certain finishes, so avoid spraying on marble, granite, or unsealed wood. For garages, basements, and exterior door frames, it works well without those concerns.

Diatomaceous Earth for Entry Points

Diatomaceous earth takes a completely different approach. It’s a fine powder made from fossilized algae, and it works mechanically rather than through scent. The microscopic particles have sharp edges that scratch the waxy outer layer of a spider’s exoskeleton. Once that protective coating is compromised, the spider loses moisture rapidly and dries out.

Use only food-grade diatomaceous earth. Apply a thin, even line along baseboards, behind furniture, in closet corners, and around exterior door frames. The key requirement is that it stays dry. Wet diatomaceous earth loses its abrasive properties entirely. It also needs to remain undisturbed, so it’s best for low-traffic areas like crawl spaces, attics, and the gaps behind appliances.

One advantage over sprays: diatomaceous earth doesn’t evaporate or lose potency over time. As long as it’s dry and in place, it keeps working. The downside is that it only affects spiders that walk directly through it, so it’s a barrier, not a room-wide repellent. Think of it as a complement to scent-based sprays rather than a replacement.

Combining Methods for Better Coverage

No single DIY method is going to create an impenetrable spider barrier. The most effective approach layers multiple strategies together. Use peppermint spray on surfaces you can see and reach easily. Lay diatomaceous earth in hidden gaps and along baseboards in low-traffic rooms. Use vinegar spray in garages, basements, or exterior thresholds where the smell won’t bother you.

Physical prevention still does more than any repellent. Seal cracks around windows and doors with caulk. Replace torn window screens. Move outdoor lighting away from doorways, since lights attract the insects that spiders feed on. Clear clutter in storage areas, because undisturbed cardboard boxes and piles of clothing are prime spider habitat. A spider that has no reason to enter your home is easier to manage than one you’re trying to repel after it’s already inside.

Pet Safety With DIY Repellents

If you have cats or dogs, essential oil sprays need careful handling. Cats are especially sensitive to essential oils. Peppermint, tea tree, lavender, and citronella can all cause stomach upset, nervous system depression, and even liver damage in cats. Dogs are somewhat more tolerant but can still react badly to concentrated oils.

This doesn’t mean you can’t use a peppermint spray at all, but apply it in areas your pets can’t reach or lick: high window frames, the tops of door casings, exterior-only surfaces. Never spray it directly on pet bedding or near food and water bowls.

If you want a fully pet-safe approach, vinegar spray and food-grade diatomaceous earth are both lower-risk options. Diatomaceous earth can irritate lungs if inhaled in large quantities (for pets and humans alike), so apply it thinly and avoid puffing clouds of it into the air. Vinegar is non-toxic to cats and dogs, though most pets will avoid the smell on their own.

What Doesn’t Work

Horse chestnuts (conkers) and Osage oranges are endlessly recommended online, but there’s no scientific support for either one. Rod Crawford, an arachnologist at the Burke Museum, has noted that he keeps horse chestnuts around his home and still has plenty of spiders. The idea likely persists because people place chestnuts in corners where spiders weren’t going to build webs anyway, then credit the chestnuts when no spiders appear.

Lemon oil is another common suggestion that performed poorly in testing. In the same lab trials where peppermint repelled spiders more than 75 percent of the time, lemon oil had no significant effect on the species tested. If you want a citrus element in your spray, it may smell nice to you, but don’t count on it to do the repelling.

Ultrasonic plug-in devices are also widely sold as spider repellents. Independent testing has consistently found them ineffective against spiders and most other pests. Save your money for a bottle of peppermint oil.
