Knockdown Speed
Cyfluthrin has a reputation for faster knockdown. Its higher vapor pressure means it releases more active ingredient into the air near the treated surface, so crawling and flying insects encounter a lethal dose more quickly. This makes cyfluthrin a stronger choice when you’re dealing with an existing infestation of cockroaches, wasps, or other pests you want eliminated immediately.
Bifenthrin still kills on contact, but its strength is in prevention. Because it stays bound to surfaces and soil particles rather than volatilizing, insects pick it up as they walk across a treated zone. The effect is reliable but slightly slower. For preventive perimeter barriers, termite treatments, and long-term lawn pest management, that tradeoff works in bifenthrin’s favor.
Common Pests and Best Uses
Both products cover a wide range of household and lawn pests, including ants, spiders, cockroaches, crickets, and chinch bugs. For lawn applications, university extension guidelines list both as effective broadcast treatments. Bifenthrin at a 0.3% concentrate is commonly applied at 6 to 12 fluid ounces per 1,000 square feet for pests like fire ants and chinch bugs. Cyfluthrin at 0.75% liquid concentration is typically applied at around 6 fluid ounces per 1,000 square feet for similar targets, with irrigation recommended before and after treatment to move the product into the thatch layer where pests live.
For perimeter treatments around foundations, bifenthrin is the more popular choice because its long residual creates a lasting barrier against millipedes, earwigs, and other crawling invaders. Cyfluthrin works well for this purpose too, but you’ll likely need to reapply more often, especially on sun-exposed surfaces.
Indoor use is where label differences matter most. Many bifenthrin products are labeled for indoor crack-and-crevice application but not for broadcast spraying across open indoor areas. Cyfluthrin formulations are more commonly labeled for broader indoor use, including some products approved for use in food-handling areas when applied correctly. Always check the specific product label, since labeling varies by manufacturer and concentration.
Environmental Behavior
Bifenthrin’s persistence is a double-edged sword. It binds extremely tightly to soil particles, with a soil adsorption coefficient (Koc) averaging around 236,000. In practical terms, this means it essentially locks onto soil and doesn’t leach into groundwater. Its water solubility is just 0.001 milligrams per liter, making it one of the least water-soluble pesticides in common use. The calculated leaching potential index for bifenthrin is very low.
The catch is that because bifenthrin clings to soil particles, it can travel with those particles during runoff. If treated soil washes into storm drains or streams after heavy rain, bifenthrin goes with it. Both pyrethroids are highly toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates at very low concentrations, so avoiding application before expected rainfall is important regardless of which product you use. Cyfluthrin poses less long-term environmental accumulation risk simply because it breaks down faster, but it carries the same acute aquatic toxicity concerns during and shortly after application.
Both compounds are toxic to bees on direct contact. If you’re spraying near flowering plants, apply in the early morning or late evening when pollinators are less active, and avoid spraying blooms directly.
Safety Around People and Pets
Pyrethroids as a class have relatively low toxicity to mammals compared to older insecticide categories. Both bifenthrin and cyfluthrin can cause skin tingling or numbness if you get concentrated product on your skin, a sensation called paresthesia. It’s temporary and not dangerous, but it’s unpleasant. Wearing gloves and long sleeves during application prevents it.
Cats are more sensitive to pyrethroids than dogs because they metabolize these compounds more slowly. Keep cats away from freshly treated surfaces until the product has dried completely. For lawn treatments, waiting until the spray has dried or the granules have been watered in and the grass is dry again is a reasonable precaution for all pets.
Which One to Choose
If your goal is a long-lasting perimeter barrier or season-long lawn protection, bifenthrin is the better fit. Its months-long residual means fewer applications and more consistent coverage. For active indoor infestations where you want fast results, or for short-term outdoor treatments where you’d prefer the chemical to break down quickly, cyfluthrin has the edge. Some pest control professionals use both: cyfluthrin for initial knockdown of an active problem, then bifenthrin for ongoing prevention.
