Cricket Season in Texas: When It Starts and What to Expect

Cricket season in Texas peaks in late August and September, when massive swarms descend on homes, parking lots, and storefronts across the state. The window of heaviest activity typically lasts four to six weeks before numbers start to decline. If you’re dealing with crickets right now, or trying to prepare for them, here’s what drives the season and what actually helps.

When Cricket Season Starts and Ends

Crickets hatch from eggs in early spring and spend roughly 12 weeks as nymphs before reaching adulthood by midsummer. During the hottest stretch of the year, they stay hidden in cool, shaded areas. The season truly kicks off when cool fronts arrive in late summer and early fall, pushing adult crickets out of hiding and toward buildings, lights, and other structures.

The swarming period runs from roughly mid-August through October, with the most intense weeks concentrated in late August and September. After four to six weeks of peak activity, populations drop sharply. By late October or November, depending on where you are in the state, the swarms are largely finished. In southern Texas, crickets can produce up to three generations per year, which can extend activity slightly longer than in northern parts of the state.

Why Some Years Are Worse Than Others

Not every fall brings the same level of cricket chaos. The largest outbreaks tend to follow dry springs and summers that are then broken by late-summer rainfall and cooler temperatures. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension researchers believe dry conditions reduce fungal diseases that normally kill cricket eggs and nymphs in the soil. When more eggs survive through a dry spring, a much larger generation of adults emerges in late summer. Add a rain event and a cool front, and you get the kind of swarm that blankets gas station walls and crunches underfoot in grocery store parking lots.

Years with consistent rainfall throughout spring and summer tend to produce more moderate cricket numbers, because fungal pathogens keep egg survival in check. So if Texas has had a particularly dry stretch followed by September storms, expect a heavy cricket year.

The Species Behind the Swarms

The primary culprit is the Texas field cricket, a species found from western Texas east to Florida. These are the dark brown or black crickets, roughly an inch long, that show up in lawns, pastures, roadsides, and anywhere with outdoor lighting. They produce two generations per year: fall adults lay eggs that overwinter and hatch into the spring generation, which then matures into the next wave of fall adults.

Males produce a continuous trilling call to attract mates, which is why you hear that steady chirping sound on warm nights. The Texas field cricket trills at a faster rate than its close relative, the southeastern field cricket, though telling them apart by ear takes practice. For homeowners, the distinction doesn’t matter much. Both species behave the same way and respond to the same control methods.

Why Crickets Swarm Around Lights

Crickets are nocturnal and strongly attracted to light, which is why gas stations, shopping centers, and brightly lit porches become ground zero during peak season. Their eyes are most sensitive to ultraviolet and short-wavelength blue light. A standard bright white LED or fluorescent light is essentially a beacon for every cricket in the area.

The color temperature of your lighting makes a real difference. Research on nocturnal insects found that UV light attracted roughly 12 times more insects than warm 3,000K LEDs and about 8 times more than cool 4,500K LEDs. Even switching from a cool white bulb (4,500K) to a warm white bulb (3,000K) can reduce attraction, though the most effective options are lights in the red, deep red, or amber spectrum. These wavelengths fall outside the range that cricket eyes detect well.

For practical purposes, this means swapping bright white porch lights and security lights for warm-toned LEDs (2,700K or 3,000K) or amber “bug lights” during peak season. If you run a business with exterior lighting, switching to warmer color temperatures is one of the most effective steps you can take. Roughly one-third of insects attracted to lights at night die before dawn from exhaustion or predation, so reducing attraction also reduces the piles of dead crickets that accumulate near doorways.

Keeping Crickets Out of Your Home

Crickets enter buildings for the same reasons most pests do: they’re following light, seeking moisture, or escaping temperature swings. Sealing gaps around doors, windows, and utility penetrations is the most effective long-term defense. Pay special attention to the gap beneath exterior doors, as even a quarter-inch space is enough for a cricket to squeeze through. Door sweeps and weatherstripping are cheap and make an immediate difference.

Reducing moisture near your foundation helps too. Crickets are drawn to damp areas, and females specifically seek moist soil to lay eggs. Fix leaky hose bibs, redirect sprinkler heads away from the house, and clear mulch or leaf litter that holds moisture against the foundation. Inside, crickets gravitate toward garages, basements, and utility rooms where humidity tends to be higher.

During heavy swarm years, perimeter insecticide treatments around the foundation can help reduce the number that make it indoors. Granular baits designed for crickets work well in flower beds and along the foundation line. Sticky traps placed along interior walls and in corners catch stragglers that get inside.

What Crickets Can Damage

Crickets aren’t dangerous to people, but they’re not harmless houseguests either. They feed on fabric, paper, and organic materials. Cotton, wool, silk, and linen clothing left on floors or in accessible storage can end up with irregular holes chewed through them. They’ll also feed on wallpaper paste, book bindings, and cardboard. In large numbers, the combination of droppings, staining, and fabric damage can be significant, especially in garages and storage areas.

Outdoors, the sheer volume of dead crickets during a bad year creates its own problem. Piles of decomposing crickets near building entrances produce a strong, unpleasant smell and can create slippery surfaces. Businesses in heavily lit commercial areas often have to sweep or pressure-wash entrances daily during peak weeks.

Regional Differences Across Texas

Central Texas cities like Austin, San Antonio, and Waco tend to experience some of the most dramatic swarms, partly because of the region’s pattern of summer drought followed by early fall rain. Coastal cities like Houston see heavy cricket activity too, though consistent humidity there can moderate populations by supporting the fungal diseases that kill eggs. West Texas, with its more arid climate, generally sees smaller swarms unless late-summer moisture arrives at just the right time. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, cricket season often aligns closely with the first cool fronts of September, which can arrive slightly earlier than in southern parts of the state.

Regardless of location, the playbook is the same: expect the heaviest activity from late August through early October, switch to warm or amber outdoor lighting, seal entry points before the season starts, and manage moisture around your foundation. The swarms are temporary, and once those four to six weeks pass, cricket numbers drop off quickly.
