Common House Rodents and How to Get Rid of Them

Three rodent species are responsible for nearly all home infestations: the house mouse, the Norway rat, and the roof rat. Each has different habits, preferred nesting spots, and signs of activity, but they all exploit surprisingly small gaps to get inside. Knowing which one you’re dealing with shapes how you respond.

Identifying the Three Common Species

House mice are the smallest and most common indoor rodents. Adults measure 2.5 to 3.75 inches long with a tail roughly the same length as their body. They have large ears and eyes relative to their head, a pointed nose, and uniformly colored grayish-brown fur. House mice can live their entire lives indoors without ever going outside, which is part of what makes them so persistent once they settle in.

Norway rats are the heaviest of the three. Adults reach about 11 inches in body length with a slightly shorter tail, totaling around 16 inches. They have small ears, small eyes, a blunt muzzle, and two-tone fur that ranges from brown to gray on top with a lighter belly. Norway rats prefer to burrow in soil but will nest in basements, crawl spaces, and wall voids near a food source.

Roof rats are slimmer and more agile climbers. The quickest way to tell them apart from Norway rats: pull the tail gently toward the head. If it extends past the snout, it’s a roof rat. Roof rats tend to nest in attics, upper floors, and dense vegetation near rooflines, while Norway rats stick closer to ground level.

Signs You Have an Infestation

Droppings are the most reliable early clue, and their size tells you what you’re dealing with. Mouse droppings are tiny, about 1/8 to 1/4 inch long with pointed ends. Roof rat droppings are roughly 1/2 inch long. Norway rat droppings are the largest at 3/4 to 1 inch, with blunt, rounded ends. Fresh droppings are dark and moist; older ones turn gray and crumble when touched.

Greasy smudge marks along walls and baseboards are another telltale sign. Rodents follow the same paths repeatedly, and the oils in their fur leave visible streaks over time. You may also notice footprints or tail drag marks in dusty areas. Gnaw marks on food packaging, wood, or wiring point to an active presence. Mice and rats are most active after dark, so hearing scratching or scurrying in walls at night is common.

Health Risks From House Rodents

Rodents carry a range of diseases that can spread to people through droppings, urine, saliva, or contaminated food and water. The risks aren’t theoretical. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a severe respiratory illness, spreads through exposure to droppings or urine from infected deer mice. Leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that ranges from mild to life-threatening, spreads when people contact soil or water contaminated with infected rodent urine.

House mice are the primary host for lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), which poses a particular danger to pregnant women because it can cause birth defects and intellectual disabilities in the developing baby. Rats can transmit rat bite fever through bites or scratches; up to 10% of rat bites may result in this infection. Salmonella spreads when rodents contaminate food or surfaces, and it hits children under 5, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals hardest.

Plague, though rare in most regions, still circulates in wild rodent populations and can reach humans through flea bites from infected rats, chipmunks, or prairie dogs.

How Rodents Get Inside

A mouse can squeeze through an opening about the size of a dime. A rat needs only a quarter-sized hole. That means any gap larger than 1/4 inch is a potential entry point. Common spots include where pipes or wiring penetrate walls, gaps around dryer vents, spaces under garage doors, cracks in foundations, and deteriorated weather stripping around exterior doors.

Rodents are also capable gnawers. They can chew through expanding foam, caulk, plastic mesh, rubber seals, and regular door sweeps, so these materials fail as long-term barriers even though many homeowners reach for them first.

Sealing Entry Points Effectively

The most durable exclusion materials use stainless steel reinforcement that rodents can’t chew through. Stainless steel fill fabric is flexible enough to stuff into gaps around pipes, vents, and structural seams. Rodent-proof escutcheon plates cover pipe penetrations cleanly. Reinforced door sweeps and garage door seals block the gaps at the base of doors that rodents commonly exploit.

For homes with burrowing Norway rats, heavy-duty landscape barrier material installed along foundations can block underground entry. The goal is to walk the exterior of your home and identify every opening larger than 1/4 inch, then seal it with something rodents can’t defeat. This step, called exclusion, is the single most effective long-term strategy. Trapping and baiting without sealing entry points just invites new rodents to replace the ones you remove.

Trapping and Baiting

Snap traps remain one of the most common and effective tools for active infestations. Place them perpendicular to the wall with the trigger end closest to the wall, since rodents travel along edges rather than through open space. Position traps where you’ve found droppings, grease marks, or other signs of activity. Peanut butter works well as bait because its sticky texture forces the rodent to engage with the trigger plate rather than snatching a loose morsel and running.

Spacing matters. Mice have small territories, so traps should be placed close together, roughly every 5 to 10 feet in active areas. Rats roam farther, so traps can be spaced at greater intervals. For a moderate infestation, setting a dozen or more traps at once is more effective than placing two or three and hoping for the best.

Rodenticide baits are another option, but they come with serious tradeoffs. Bait is attractive and dangerous to children, pets, and wildlife. A poisoned rodent can also be eaten by a pet or predator, passing the toxin up the food chain. If you use bait, tamper-resistant bait stations reduce the risk of accidental exposure. Recent regulatory changes have limited the types of rodenticide available for home use, restricting the more toxic formulations to licensed professionals. Secure trash cans afterward to prevent pets or wildlife from accessing poisoned rodents that die outdoors.

Safely Cleaning Up After Rodents

Cleaning rodent droppings incorrectly can aerosolize pathogens, particularly hantavirus. Never sweep or vacuum droppings, urine, or nesting material before disinfecting the area first.

Start by ventilating the space. If a room or building has been closed up, open doors and windows for at least 30 minutes before you begin. Wear rubber, latex, vinyl, or nitrile gloves throughout the entire process. Prepare a bleach solution by mixing 1.5 cups of household bleach into 1 gallon of water. Spray droppings and urine thoroughly and let them soak for at least 5 minutes. Then pick everything up with paper towels and dispose of them in a sealed bag.

After removing visible droppings, mop hard floors and wipe down countertops, cabinets, and drawers with the same bleach solution. Carpets should be cleaned with a commercial-grade steam cleaner or shampoo rather than vacuumed dry. Wash any potentially contaminated bedding or clothing in hot water with detergent and dry on high heat. For items that can’t be wet-cleaned, like books and papers, leave them in direct sunlight for several hours or in a rodent-free indoor space for about a week before handling. Disinfect your gloves before removing them, then wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.

In heavily contaminated spaces, consider wearing disposable coveralls, rubber boots, protective goggles, and a mask that covers your mouth and nose.
