Cigarette beetles and drugstore beetles are two of the most commonly confused pantry pests, and for good reason. Both are tiny, reddish-brown beetles roughly 2 to 3 millimeters long that show up in stored food products. But they’re different species with distinct physical features, and telling them apart matters for effective control. The fastest way to distinguish them is by looking at two body parts: the antennae and the wing covers.
How to Tell Them Apart
The most reliable identification feature is the antennae. A cigarette beetle has serrated antennae, meaning each segment flares out slightly like the teeth on a saw blade. A drugstore beetle’s antennae are smooth along the shaft and end in a distinct three-segmented club, almost like a tiny golf club at the tip. If you can get the beetle under a magnifying glass or even a phone camera with zoom, this difference is usually visible.
The second difference is the texture of the wing covers (the hard shell over the back). Drugstore beetle wing covers have rows of tiny pits running lengthwise, giving them a lined or grooved appearance. Cigarette beetle wing covers are completely smooth. In good lighting, this striated pattern on a drugstore beetle is noticeable even to the naked eye. Together, these two features make identification straightforward: smooth antennae with a club plus ridged wings means drugstore beetle, serrated antennae plus smooth wings means cigarette beetle.
What Each Beetle Infests
Both species are remarkably unfussy eaters, which is part of what makes them such successful pests. Their diets overlap heavily, but each has tendencies worth knowing about.
Cigarette beetles earned their common name because they’re notorious for infesting tobacco products. Cigars, cigarettes, loose tobacco, and chewing tobacco attacked by cigarette beetles will have small round holes chewed through the material. Beyond tobacco, they feed on a wide range of dried goods: spices (especially paprika and cayenne), flour, dried herbs, pet food, dried flowers, and even book bindings.
Drugstore beetles get their name from their historical habit of infesting the herbs and dried plant materials once stored in old pharmacies. They share the cigarette beetle’s broad appetite for flour, spices, and grain products, but they’re also known for chewing through materials you might not expect, including leather, wool, and even some types of paper and cardboard packaging. Both species can bore through thin plastic wrap and foil to reach food inside, so flimsy packaging offers little protection.
Signs of an Infestation
The first sign most people notice is the beetles themselves, alive or dead, near windows or light fixtures. Both species are attracted to light, so finding small reddish-brown beetles on windowsills is a common tip-off. They’re strong fliers, unlike some other pantry pests.
Inside infested products, you’ll find the larvae, which are small, white, grub-like creatures that do the real damage. After hatching, larvae tunnel through the food material, causing destruction and contamination as they go. When they’re ready to pupate, they spin a silken cocoon coated in bits of whatever they’ve been eating, which can sometimes look like small clumps or webbing mixed into the product. In packaged goods, look for tiny round exit holes where adult beetles have chewed their way out.
Check dried spices, flour, cereal, pet food, dried pasta, and any product that’s been sitting in the pantry for months. Both beetles thrive in undisturbed food stores, so items pushed to the back of a shelf are prime targets.
How They Reproduce
Both species go through a complete life cycle of egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs directly on or near a food source, and the hatched larvae immediately begin feeding. The entire cycle from egg to adult takes roughly 40 to 90 days depending on temperature and humidity, with warmer conditions speeding things up considerably. Adults can live several weeks, during which females may lay dozens of eggs.
This means a single overlooked bag of spice or flour can produce multiple generations over the course of a few months, turning a small problem into a widespread infestation across your pantry. Both species reproduce year-round indoors, since heated homes provide the warm conditions they prefer.
Getting Rid of Them
The core strategy is the same for both beetles: find and eliminate the infested source material.
- Inspect everything. Pull every item out of your pantry and examine it carefully. Check dried goods, spices, pet food, birdseed, dried flowers, and even decorative items made from dried plant material. Discard anything with beetles, larvae, holes, or webbing.
- Clean thoroughly. Vacuum all shelves, cracks, and crevices in the pantry. Wipe surfaces down afterward. Larvae and eggs can hide in tiny gaps between shelving.
- Freeze suspect items. If you have products you want to save, seal them in a plastic bag and place them in a freezer set to minus 4°F (minus 20°C) for seven days. This temperature, maintained for the full week, is generally effective at killing all life stages including eggs.
- Store food in hard containers. Transfer flour, spices, grains, and other dry goods into glass jars or thick plastic containers with tight-fitting lids. Both beetle species can chew through thin packaging, so the container itself needs to be a real barrier.
Pheromone traps are available for both species and use a synthetic sex scent to attract male beetles. These traps are useful for monitoring whether an infestation is ongoing after you’ve cleaned, and they can help pinpoint which area of the home the beetles are coming from. The traps are species-specific, so make sure you buy the correct one for the beetle you’ve identified.
Why Correct Identification Matters
Because the two species look so similar and share many food sources, people often assume it doesn’t matter which one they have. For basic pantry cleanup, that’s mostly true. But if you’re using pheromone traps, you need the right species-specific lure. And knowing which beetle you’re dealing with can help you search more efficiently. If you’ve identified cigarette beetles, checking tobacco products, dried herbs, and spices first makes sense. If it’s drugstore beetles, also inspect leather goods, books, and items you might not think of as food sources. Expanding your search to non-food items can be the difference between solving the problem in one round of cleaning and dealing with repeated re-infestations for months.
