Cedar apple rust is a fungal disease that requires two completely different types of trees to complete its life cycle: junipers (including eastern redcedar) and apples or crabapples. The fungus alternates between these hosts year after year, producing dramatically different symptoms on each one. It cannot spread from apple to apple or cedar to cedar, so the disease only persists where both host types grow within a few miles of each other.
How the Life Cycle Works
The fungus spends part of its life on juniper trees and part on apple trees, cycling back and forth on a roughly two-year schedule. On junipers, it forms round, golf ball-sized woody galls on the branches. These galls can sit quietly for months, but after a warm spring rain in April or May, they sprout bright orange, gelatinous tentacles called telial horns. A single gall can produce five to seven rounds of these horns over the course of spring, sending out a fresh set after each warm rain.
The telial horns release spores that travel on wind currents to nearby apple or crabapple trees, where they infect the leaves and fruit. On the apple side, the fungus produces a different type of spore that blows back to junipers in late summer, landing on branches and beginning to form new galls. Those galls mature over the following year, then produce their own telial horns the next spring to restart the cycle. Because the fungus needs both hosts, removing one type of tree from the area can break the chain entirely.
What It Looks Like on Apple Trees
On apple and crabapple trees, cedar apple rust shows up primarily on leaves and fruit. Infected leaves develop bright yellow-orange spots on the upper surface, often with a ring of tiny raised dots. The undersides of these spots eventually grow small, tube-like structures that release spores back toward junipers. Fruit infections cause similar discolored spots and can deform or blemish apples, reducing both quality and yield. Heavy infections can cause early leaf drop, weakening the tree over successive seasons.
What It Looks Like on Junipers
On redcedars and other junipers, the most visible sign is the galls: hard, brownish, roughly spherical growths attached to small branches. They’re easy to overlook in winter, but impossible to miss once the telial horns emerge. The bright orange, jelly-like projections can make a heavily infested tree look almost decorated. After the horns dry out and the spores are released, the galls turn dark and eventually die, though they may cling to the branch for a while. Severe infestations can weaken and even kill redcedars over time.
Distance Between Trees Matters
Spores from cedar apple rust can travel surprising distances on the wind. If your apple trees are within two to five miles of junipers, annual management is worth planning for. NC State Extension notes that removing all alternate hosts within a four to five mile radius should prevent infection entirely, though that’s rarely practical in most landscapes. A more realistic goal is removing junipers within a two-mile radius of your apple trees, which disrupts the cycle enough to make other control measures far more effective. If you’re planting new apple trees and have a choice of location, maximizing distance from any nearby redcedars is one of the simplest preventive steps.
Resistant Apple Varieties
Choosing the right apple variety is one of the most effective long-term strategies. Susceptibility varies widely across cultivars, from “very resistant” (no control needed) to “highly susceptible” (control always needed where the disease is present).
Some popular varieties rated very resistant include Delicious, Enterprise, Liberty, McIntosh, Redfree, Baldwin, Sansa, and Zestar!. Gala Supreme is also rated very resistant, which is notable because standard Gala is rated highly susceptible. Other resistant picks include Empire, Granny Smith, Winesap, Spartan, Macoun, and Grimes Golden.
On the other end of the spectrum, several widely grown commercial varieties are highly susceptible: Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, Braeburn, Honeycrisp (rated susceptible), Jonathan, Lodi, Rome Beauty, and York Imperial. If you’re growing any of these within a few miles of junipers, proactive management is essential.
Timing Fungicide Applications
Fungicides work preventively, not curatively. They need to be on the leaves before spores arrive. The critical window begins in early spring as apple trees break dormancy and new leaves emerge. Repeat applications every 7 to 10 days through petal drop, adjusting based on rainfall. Wet spring weather increases infection pressure and may wash off protective residue, so more frequent applications may be needed during rainy stretches.
Active ingredients commonly used include myclobutanil, propiconazole, and mancozeb. The first two are systemic, meaning they’re absorbed into plant tissue and offer some protection even after rain. Mancozeb is a contact protectant that stays on the leaf surface. For home orchardists, products containing myclobutanil are widely available at garden centers. Always follow the label for application rates and pre-harvest intervals, especially on fruit you plan to eat.
Pruning Galls From Junipers
If you have junipers on your property, you can reduce spore production by pruning off galls before the telial horns emerge in spring. This means removing them in late winter, ideally by February or early March depending on your region. Once the orange horns appear, spores are already being released and pruning offers little benefit for that season. On lightly infected trees, gall removal can be straightforward. On heavily infested trees, the number of galls may make complete removal impractical, and replacing the tree with a non-host species becomes a more realistic option.
