The most effective carpenter bee bait is simply a dead carpenter bee placed inside your trap. When a carpenter bee dies, it releases pheromones that signal other carpenter bees to investigate, creating a self-reinforcing cycle where each catch makes the trap more attractive. If you don’t have a dead bee to start with, commercial pheromone lures and a well-designed trap can get you that critical first catch.

Why Dead Bees Work as Bait

Carpenter bees release a chemical signature when they die that draws other carpenter bees to the location. The more dead bees accumulate in your trap’s collection chamber, the stronger that scent becomes and the faster the trap fills. This is why many experienced trappers recommend placing a single dead carpenter bee in the jar or collection receptacle when first hanging a trap in spring. To use a liquid lure, apply 5 to 10 drops onto a cotton ball and place it inside the trap’s collection chamber. Then add 1 to 2 drops directly onto each entrance hole so the scent wafts outward. Reapply every 2 to 4 weeks, since the volatile compounds evaporate over time. What Not to Use as Bait

Carpenter bees are wood-boring insects, not nectar foragers in the same way honeybees are. They aren’t drawn to sweet liquid traps.
