Carpenter ants are one of the most common wood-damaging insects in North Carolina, with at least 11 species documented across the state. Unlike termites, they don’t eat wood. They excavate it to build nests, carving smooth, polished tunnels through softened or moisture-damaged lumber. That distinction matters because it changes how you spot them, how much damage they cause, and how you get rid of them.
Species Found in North Carolina
The most widespread carpenter ant in North Carolina is the black carpenter ant (Camponotus pennsylvanicus), a large, entirely black species that’s also the one most likely to show up inside homes. Workers range from about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, making them noticeably larger than the small sugar ants or pavement ants you might see on a kitchen counter.
North Carolina is also home to several other carpenter ant species that are less commonly encountered indoors but still present in wooded areas and occasionally in structures. These include reddish-brown species like Camponotus castaneus and Camponotus chromaiodes, which have a dark head and a reddish-brown midsection. Others, like Camponotus floridanus, are more common in the coastal plain and southern parts of the state. Regardless of species, the biology and damage potential are similar: they all nest in wood weakened by moisture.
How to Tell Them Apart From Termites
This is the single most important identification question for North Carolina homeowners, since eastern subterranean termites are also extremely common in the state. The differences are straightforward once you know what to look for. Carpenter ants have a clearly pinched waist, bent antennae, and (if winged) two pairs of wings where the front pair is noticeably longer than the back pair. Termites have a thick, straight waist, straight antennae, and wings of equal length.
The damage itself looks different too. Carpenter ant tunnels are clean and polished inside, almost sanded smooth. Termite galleries are rough, messy, and often packed with mud. If you tap a piece of suspect wood and it sounds hollow, you can probe it with a screwdriver. Crumbling wood with smooth internal channels points to carpenter ants. Rough, muddy channels point to termites.
Where They Nest
Carpenter ants are opportunists that target wood already softened by moisture. They don’t attack dry, sound lumber the way drywood termites can. Inside a home, the most common nesting sites are rotting windowsills, wood around sinks and bathtubs, leaky wall cavities, and roof sheathing damaged by poor flashing or clogged gutters. If carpenter ants have set up a nest inside your house, it almost always means you also have a moisture problem in that area.
Outdoors, they nest in dead trees, stumps, landscape timbers, and firewood piles. A colony living in a tree doesn’t mean the tree is being destroyed by ants. The tree was already weakened by rot or decay, and the ants simply moved in. The concern starts when an outdoor colony establishes satellite nests inside a nearby structure. Workers travel between the parent colony and satellite nests, sometimes bridging from tree branches that touch the roof or siding directly onto the house.
Seasonal Activity in North Carolina
North Carolina’s warm, humid climate gives carpenter ants a long active season. Workers forage from early spring through late fall, and in heated homes they can remain active year-round. The reproductive cycle follows a predictable pattern: eggs laid in spring produce workers and winged reproductive forms (called swarmers) that mature by August or September. Those swarmers are produced in the fall but don’t leave the nest until the following spring, when temperatures warm enough to trigger their mating flights.
If you see large winged ants inside your home in late winter or early spring, that’s a strong sign of an indoor colony. Swarmers emerging indoors means a mature nest is somewhere inside the structure, not just foraging ants wandering in from outside. After mating, swarmers shed their wings, so finding small translucent wings on windowsills or near doors is another red flag.
Signs of an Infestation
Carpenter ant colonies can live inside a structure for years before you notice obvious damage, largely because the ants work from the inside out. Here’s what to watch for:
- Frass piles. Carpenter ants push excavated material out of their tunnels, creating small piles of sawdust-like debris near baseboards, under wooden furniture, or in crawl spaces. Unlike actual sawdust, frass often contains insect body parts mixed in with wood shavings. Finding frass with no obvious source (no recent drilling or woodworking) is one of the clearest signs of an active colony.
- Large black ants indoors. Seeing one or two large ants in the kitchen during summer could just be foragers that wandered in. Seeing them regularly, especially during winter months when they shouldn’t be active outdoors, suggests a nest inside the home.
- Hollow or soft wood. Tap door frames, window frames, and baseboards in areas where you’ve seen ants or suspect moisture damage. A hollow sound or wood that yields easily to a screwdriver means something has been excavating inside.
- Rustling sounds in walls. A faint scratching or rustling noise near baseboards or window frames, especially at night when the house is quiet, can indicate a colony working inside the wall cavity.
- Discarded wings. Translucent wings found near windows, doors, or vents in spring indicate that swarmers emerged from an indoor nest.
How Much Damage They Actually Cause
Carpenter ants work more slowly than subterranean termites. A termite colony can cause serious structural damage within a year or two, while carpenter ants typically take several years to do equivalent harm. That said, a large, well-established carpenter ant colony with satellite nests can absolutely compromise structural wood over time, especially if the underlying moisture problem keeps softening new lumber for them to expand into. The damage tends to be concentrated around the original moisture source: a leaky pipe, a poorly sealed window, or a section of roof that traps water.
The real cost often isn’t the ant damage alone. It’s discovering the water damage that allowed the ants to move in. Repairing a rotted sill plate or replacing water-damaged wall studs is frequently the bigger project.
Getting Rid of an Active Colony
The key to eliminating carpenter ants is finding and destroying the nest, not just killing the foragers you see in the kitchen. Spraying individual ants with contact insecticide does little because the queen and the bulk of the colony remain hidden inside the wood. Bait-based approaches are more effective because foraging workers carry the bait back to the nest, where it spreads through the colony. Non-repellent liquid treatments applied around the home’s perimeter work on a similar principle: ants walk through the treated zone without detecting it and transfer the product to nestmates.
If you can locate the nest directly, through frass trails, rustling sounds, or by following forager trails at night with a flashlight, treating the nest site directly is the fastest solution. For large or hard-to-locate infestations, professional pest control is worth the investment. A technician can inject treatments into wall voids and identify satellite nests that you might miss.
Preventing Carpenter Ants in Your Home
Because carpenter ants require moisture-damaged wood to nest, moisture control is the single most effective prevention strategy. Fix leaks around attic vents, pipes, sinks, chimneys, and skylights. Replace any water-damaged wood rather than painting over it. In crawl spaces, install a vapor barrier and ensure adequate ventilation through foundation vents. Keep rain gutters clean and direct downspouts so water flows away from the foundation rather than pooling against it.
Trim tree branches so they don’t contact your roof or siding. Carpenter ants use these as direct bridges from outdoor colonies into your home. Store firewood away from the house and off the ground, since woodpiles are a favorite nesting site. Remove dead stumps and decaying landscape timbers near the foundation when practical. These steps won’t guarantee you’ll never see a carpenter ant, but they eliminate the conditions that turn a passing forager into a permanent resident.
