A bug zapper racket is a handheld, battery-powered device shaped like a tennis racket that electrocutes flying insects on contact. You swing it through the air or hold it in the path of a mosquito, fly, or gnat, and the electrified mesh grid kills the bug instantly. These devices typically operate at 2,000 to 4,000 volts, enough to dispatch small insects but not enough to cause serious harm to an adult human. They’ve become one of the most popular insect control tools for patios, camping, and indoor use because they’re cheap, chemical-free, and oddly satisfying to use.
How Bug Zapper Rackets Work
The racket contains three layers of mesh. The two outer layers are a coarse, widely spaced metal grid that your fingers can’t easily slip through. Sandwiched between them is a finer mesh that carries the electrical charge. When an insect is large enough to bridge the gap between the charged inner mesh and one of the outer grids, it completes the circuit. The passive mode is less effective than active swinging, especially for mosquitoes. Research has consistently shown that mosquitoes are not strongly attracted to UV light.
