Brodifacoum and bromethalin are two of the most common active ingredients in rodent bait products, but they work in completely different ways and pose very different risks if a pet or non-target animal is exposed. Brodifacoum is an anticoagulant that causes fatal internal bleeding over several days and has a reliable antidote. Bromethalin is a neurotoxin that causes brain swelling and has no antidote once symptoms appear. That single distinction matters enormously if you have dogs, cats, or wildlife in the area.
How Each One Kills Rodents
Brodifacoum is a second-generation anticoagulant rodenticide. It blocks an enzyme the liver needs to recycle vitamin K, which is essential for producing clotting factors. Without those clotting factors, blood can no longer coagulate normally. A rodent that eats brodifacoum bait typically dies from uncontrolled internal bleeding within three to five days. Because death is delayed, the rodent doesn’t associate the bait with feeling sick, so it continues feeding. Second-generation anticoagulants like brodifacoum are 2.5 to 200 times more potent than older first-generation versions like warfarin, and a single feeding is enough to deliver a lethal dose.
Bromethalin takes a completely different route. Once ingested, the body converts it into an active compound that disrupts energy production inside nerve cells. Specifically, it uncouples a process called oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria of central nervous system cells. When that energy supply fails, the pumps that control fluid balance across cell membranes stop working. Fluid accumulates in the protective sheaths around nerves and inside brain tissue, causing swelling of the brain and spinal cord. The severity of neurological damage depends directly on how much the animal consumed.
Symptom Onset and Warning Signs
With brodifacoum poisoning, there’s a deceptive lag. An animal may look perfectly normal for two to five days after ingestion because the body still has a reserve of functional clotting factors. Once those reserves are depleted, signs of bleeding begin: lethargy, pale gums, difficulty breathing (from bleeding into the chest cavity), blood in urine or stool, nosebleeds, or bruising. In some cases the first visible sign is sudden collapse.
Bromethalin symptoms can appear within hours at high doses or take one to several days at lower doses. The neurological signs are distinct from anticoagulant poisoning: tremors, unsteady walking, hind-leg weakness or paralysis, seizures, and a depressed level of consciousness. In birds, bromethalin poisoning follows a similar pattern, progressing from hind-limb weakness to full paralysis, loss of coordination, and difficulty swallowing.
Treatment Options and Prognosis
This is where the two substances diverge most dramatically. Brodifacoum poisoning has a straightforward, effective antidote: vitamin K1 supplementation. Because the poison works by blocking vitamin K recycling, providing vitamin K directly restores the body’s ability to produce clotting factors. Treatment typically needs to continue for several weeks because brodifacoum lingers in the body far longer than older anticoagulants like warfarin. When caught early and treated consistently, the prognosis is generally good.
Bromethalin poisoning has no specific antidote. If an animal is known to have eaten bromethalin bait very recently (within one to two hours), a veterinarian may induce vomiting and administer activated charcoal to limit absorption. Once neurological symptoms have set in, treatment is limited to supportive care: managing brain swelling, controlling seizures, and maintaining hydration. The prognosis at that point is guarded to poor, particularly if symptoms are severe. This is the core reason bromethalin exposures are considered more dangerous in a household with pets.
Risk to Pets
Cats are more sensitive to bromethalin than dogs. The lethal dose for cats is 1.8 mg per kilogram of body weight, compared to 4.7 mg/kg for dogs. To put that in practical terms, a small cat would need to consume far less bait to reach a life-threatening dose than a large dog. However, dogs are more frequently poisoned simply because they’re more likely to seek out and eat bait blocks or stations.
For brodifacoum, the toxic threshold is much lower in absolute terms (fractions of a milligram per kilogram), which is why it’s so effective as a single-dose rodenticide. But the critical difference is that veterinary intervention with vitamin K1 can reverse the poisoning even after symptoms appear, as long as bleeding hasn’t become catastrophic. With bromethalin, the window for effective intervention is narrow and closes once the neurotoxin has done its damage.
Secondary Poisoning and Wildlife
Secondary poisoning occurs when a predator eats a rodent that has consumed bait. This is one area where the two compounds differ sharply.
Brodifacoum poses a high secondary poisoning risk to both birds and mammals. Residues persist in the liver of poisoned rodents for many weeks, so a hawk, owl, fox, or outdoor cat that eats multiple poisoned rodents over time can accumulate a toxic dose. Studies have consistently identified brodifacoum as one of the rodenticides most frequently detected in dead raptors. The National Pesticide Information Center rates brodifacoum’s secondary risk to both birds and mammals as “high.”
Bromethalin’s secondary poisoning risk is rated “low” for both birds and mammals, though this is based on limited evidence rather than extensive field data. In one study, dogs fed 600 grams of meat from rats that had consumed bromethalin bait showed no signs of toxicity. That said, the bait concentration in that study was lower than some currently registered products, so the results may not fully represent real-world exposure scenarios. The USDA’s wildlife damage management program reports no confirmed non-target kills from bromethalin applications to date.
Regulatory Differences
The EPA has placed significant restrictions on second-generation anticoagulants, including brodifacoum. Due to the high risk of secondary poisoning in wildlife, brodifacoum products are no longer available to general consumers in loose bait form. Consumer products containing brodifacoum must be sold in pre-loaded, tamper-resistant bait stations. Professional pest control operators still have access to a wider range of brodifacoum formulations.
Bromethalin faces fewer regulatory restrictions and is widely available in consumer rodenticide products. In fact, after the EPA tightened rules on second-generation anticoagulants, several major manufacturers shifted their consumer product lines to bromethalin as the primary active ingredient. This means bromethalin is now the rodenticide pet owners are most likely to encounter in hardware stores and home improvement retailers, despite its lack of an antidote.
Which Poses a Greater Risk Overall
The answer depends on the context. For wildlife and the broader ecosystem, brodifacoum is the more dangerous compound. Its persistence in animal tissue and high secondary poisoning risk make it a significant threat to raptors, foxes, and other predators that eat rodents. This is exactly why regulators have restricted its consumer availability.
For households with pets, bromethalin arguably carries more risk in the event of accidental ingestion. The absence of an antidote and the narrow treatment window mean that even a small exposure can become a veterinary emergency with a poor outcome. Brodifacoum poisoning, while serious, is treatable when identified in time.
