The most effective yard repellents for dogs and cats combine a physical deterrent with a scent-based backup. Why One Repellent Rarely Works for Both

Dogs have roughly 300 million scent receptors, and cats have about 200 million, making both species far more sensitive to odors than humans (who have just 5 million). But cats are actually better at distinguishing between similar scents thanks to a specialized receptor type they carry in much higher numbers than dogs. In practice, this means a scent that overwhelms a dog may simply annoy a cat, and a smell cats avoid entirely might not faze a determined dog at all.

For dogs, the issue is more often about access. A solid fence with no gaps at the bottom stops most wandering dogs. Rotation matters, too. Animals that encounter the same deterrent in the same spot for weeks will eventually test it.
