Pennsylvania is home to hundreds of beetle species, from beneficial predators that protect gardens to invasive pests that threaten forests and homes. Whether you’ve spotted something unfamiliar in your yard, your pantry, or on a tree trunk, chances are good it’s one of a handful of common species. Here’s what lives in PA, what helps, and what causes problems.
Pennsylvania’s State Insect Is a Beetle
The lightning bug (or firefly) that lights up summer evenings across the state is actually a beetle. Photuris pennsylvanica belongs to the order Coleoptera, making it a true beetle rather than a bug or fly. It was designated Pennsylvania’s official state insect, and it’s one of the most recognizable insects in the commonwealth.
Beneficial Beetles Worth Keeping Around
Not every beetle is a pest. Several common species in Pennsylvania actively protect gardens by eating the insects that damage plants.
Ground beetles are one of the largest groups of predatory beetles, with over 3,000 species across North America. Both adults and larvae eat caterpillars, root maggots, slugs, and other soil-dwelling insects. They’re typically dark-colored, fast-moving beetles you’ll find under rocks, logs, or leaf litter. If you see them in your garden beds, they’re working in your favor.
Lady beetles (ladybugs) are the most familiar beneficial beetle. A single lady beetle can eat dozens of aphids per day, making them valuable allies for anyone growing vegetables or ornamentals. Tiger beetles, which are closely related to ground beetles, and rove beetles are two more predatory groups found throughout the state. All of these species can reduce pest problems enough to eliminate the need for chemical treatments in some cases.
Japanese Beetles
Japanese beetles are one of the most visible garden pests in Pennsylvania. The metallic green-and-copper adults skeletonize leaves on roses, grapes, lindens, and dozens of other plants, while their grubs feed on grass roots and damage lawns.
One of the most effective control methods is surprisingly low-tech: in the early morning or evening, when temperatures are cool, walk through your yard and knock beetles into a bowl of soapy water. They’ll drop instead of flying away. The smell of dead beetles actually repels living ones, so placing containers of trapped beetles near plants you want to protect can help deter others.
Japanese beetle traps, despite their popularity, are not recommended by Penn State Extension. The traps use floral scents and sex pheromones to attract beetles, but they only capture about 75 percent of the beetles they draw in. The remaining 25 percent end up feeding on your plants, meaning the trap can make your pest problem worse. Lawn care also matters: female beetles prefer moist soil for laying eggs, so from late June through late July, letting your lawn go dormant and avoiding frequent shallow watering reduces grub survival. When you do water, occasional deep irrigation is better for grass roots and less hospitable for beetles.
For chemical options, neem oil and pyrethrin (derived from chrysanthemums) are somewhat effective. Spinosad, a bacteria-derived treatment, works but requires reapplication and doesn’t kill quickly. Broad-spectrum insecticides kill beetles but also wipe out the beneficial predators that keep other pest populations in check. Systemic insecticides that target Japanese beetles also harm pollinators, so they come with real trade-offs.
Invasive Beetles Threatening PA Forests
Two wood-boring invasive species pose the most serious threat to Pennsylvania’s trees: the emerald ash borer and the Asian longhorned beetle.
Emerald Ash Borer
The emerald ash borer, a metallic green beetle originally from Southeast Asia, kills ash trees by tunneling through the wood as larvae, cutting off the flow of nutrients. It has spread throughout Pennsylvania, and the state’s quarantine on ash products was lifted in April 2011 because the beetle had become too widespread to contain. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture now focuses on surveys, public outreach, and encouraging people to buy and burn firewood locally rather than transporting it. Keeping firewood within 50 miles of where you bought it is one of the simplest ways to slow the spread of this and other wood-boring pests.
Asian Longhorned Beetle
The Asian longhorned beetle is a large, striking insect with long black-and-white banded antennae. Its larvae bore deep into hardwood trees, leaving round exit holes when adults emerge and coarse sawdust at the base of infested trunks. There is no practical treatment for infested trees other than destroying them.
This beetle prefers maples, and that’s a significant concern: soft and hard maple species make up more than 25 percent of Pennsylvania’s hardwood forests. It also attacks ash, birch, elm, poplar, willow, and several other species. The economic stakes are enormous. As much as $10 billion in lumber and pulp production, plus $3 million in annual maple syrup sales, are at risk from this single pest. Both the emerald ash borer and Asian longhorned beetle spread through transport of infested firewood and logs, which is why the “buy local, burn local” message is so important.
Colorado Potato Beetles and Other Crop Pests
If you grow vegetables in Pennsylvania, a few beetle species are worth watching for. The Colorado potato beetle feeds exclusively on plants in the nightshade family and can cause serious damage to potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplant. Adults are distinctive, with yellow-and-black striped wing covers, and both adults and their reddish-orange larvae chew through foliage quickly. The yellowmargined leaf beetle is a pest of cruciferous crops like broccoli, kale, and cabbage. Flea beetles, small and jumpy, chew tiny holes in the leaves of many vegetable seedlings, and sap beetles target sweet corn.
Household Beetles
Several beetle species turn up indoors in Pennsylvania, usually in kitchens or storage areas. The sawtoothed grain beetle and the closely related merchant grain beetle infest stored grains like flour, cereal, and rice. The cigarette beetle, a small reddish-brown pest, attacks an unusually wide range of stored products including spices, dried herbs, pet food, and even book bindings. The larder beetle, historically a pest of cured meats in Europe and North America, feeds on animal-based products like dried meats, cheese, and pet food, but also shows up in wall voids where dead insects have accumulated.
Then there’s the multicolored Asian lady beetle, which is native to Asia but now well established across Pennsylvania. Outdoors, it’s a useful predator of aphids. The problem comes in fall, when large numbers of them swarm into homes seeking shelter for winter. They congregate on south-facing walls, squeeze through gaps around windows and doors, and can stain surfaces and trigger mild allergic reactions in some people. They’re also displacing native lady beetle species, which is an ecological concern beyond the household nuisance.
How to Identify What You’ve Found
A few quick features can help you narrow down an unfamiliar beetle. Size is a good starting point: Japanese beetles are roughly half an inch long with a metallic sheen, while Asian longhorned beetles are over an inch long with dramatically long antennae. Emerald ash borers are small (about half an inch) and a vivid metallic green. Pantry beetles like the cigarette beetle and sawtoothed grain beetle are tiny, usually under an eighth of an inch.
Where you found the beetle matters just as much as what it looks like. Beetles on tree trunks with visible exit holes or sawdust suggest wood borers. Beetles in flour, cereal, or spice containers point to stored-product pests. Beetles on vegetable leaves, especially with visible chewing damage, are likely crop pests. And clusters of orange-spotted beetles gathering on sunny walls in autumn are almost certainly Asian lady beetles looking for a way inside.
