Bed Bug Bites: When to DIY and When to Call Pest Control

Bed bug bites are itchy, often appear in clusters or lines, and can take up to 14 days to show up on your skin. If you’re seeing bites, you likely have an active infestation that needs targeted pest control, not just bite treatment. Here’s how to handle both sides of the problem.

Why You Don’t Feel the Bite

Bed bugs inject an anesthetic and an anticoagulant when they feed, which is why most people sleep right through it. The anesthetic numbs the skin at the bite site, and the anticoagulant keeps your blood flowing freely so the bug can feed for several minutes uninterrupted. You won’t notice anything until the reaction develops hours or even days later.

Bite marks typically appear as small, red, swollen bumps, often in a line or cluster of three or more. They tend to show up on exposed skin: arms, shoulders, neck, and face. Some people never visibly react at all, developing only a tiny mark or nothing whatsoever. Others experience intense itching and welts that last a week or two before fading on their own.

Treating the Bites

Most bed bug bites heal without any treatment within one to two weeks. If the itching is bothering you, a skin cream containing hydrocortisone can reduce inflammation, and an oral antihistamine like diphenhydramine helps with itching and swelling. The main risk is scratching the bites open and introducing bacteria, which can cause a secondary skin infection. Keep the bites clean, and if any bite becomes increasingly red, warm, or swollen over several days, that’s a sign of infection worth getting checked.

Confirming You Have an Infestation

Bites alone aren’t proof of bed bugs since other insects cause similar marks. You confirm an infestation by finding the bugs themselves or their physical evidence: dark reddish-brown fecal spots, small blood stains on sheets, pale shed skins, or tiny white egg cases.

About 85% of bed bugs in a home are found in or near the bed, so start your inspection there. Lift the mattress and examine every seam, fold, and piping on both the mattress and box spring. Check the bed frame joints and the back of the headboard. Bed bugs can squeeze into any crack as narrow as a credit card, so look carefully in seams, screw holes, and staple points.

The remaining 15% of bugs tend to hide in upholstered furniture, along baseboards, behind wallpaper, inside nightstand drawers, and behind wall hangings. They prefer fabric and wood surfaces over metal or plastic. A small flashlight and a magnifying glass help, especially for spotting eggs, which are about the size of a pinhead.

What You Can Do Yourself

Heat is one of the most reliable tools you have at home. Bed bugs die after 90 minutes of constant exposure to 113°F, or within 20 minutes at 118°F. Eggs are harder to kill, requiring 118°F for a full 90 minutes to reach complete elimination.

For clothing, bedding, and any fabric items that fit in a dryer, run them on the highest heat setting for at least 30 minutes. Most household dryers on “high” reach well above 120°F, which exceeds the lethal threshold. Bag items in sealed plastic before transporting them to the laundry to avoid spreading bugs through your home. Anything that can’t be laundered, like shoes or stuffed animals, can go in the dryer alone on high heat.

Vacuum mattress seams, bed frames, baseboards, and any cracks near sleeping areas thoroughly. Immediately seal and dispose of the vacuum bag or empty the canister into an outdoor trash bin. Encasing your mattress and box spring in zippered, bug-proof covers traps any remaining bugs inside, where they’ll eventually starve. At normal room temperature, adult bed bugs survive only two to three months without feeding, so keep encasements on for at least that long.

Professional Heat Treatment

Whole-room heat treatment is the most effective single-session approach to eliminating bed bugs. Pest control companies bring in industrial heaters and high-powered fans that raise the entire room’s temperature to at least 113°F and hold it there for 60 minutes or more after every sensor in the room hits that threshold. The fans create convection currents that push heat into wall voids, furniture interiors, and other hiding spots, killing bugs and eggs rapidly.

A typical heat treatment takes six to eight hours for a standard room and usually requires one visit. You’ll need to remove heat-sensitive items like candles, aerosol cans, and certain electronics beforehand. The advantage is that heat reaches places chemicals can’t, penetrating deep into mattresses, furniture cushions, and wall cavities. The drawback is cost: whole-room treatments generally run between $1,000 and $3,000 depending on the size of the space and your location.

Chemical Treatments and Why Some Fail

Bed bugs have developed widespread resistance to pyrethroids, the class of insecticide most commonly used in household pest control for decades. This resistance is a major reason DIY sprays from hardware stores often fail to solve the problem. Bugs that survive pyrethroid exposure pass that resistance to their offspring, making the population progressively harder to kill with the same products.

Professional pest control companies have shifted to combination products that pair a pyrethroid with a second insecticide class called neonicotinoids. These dual-action formulas attack the bug’s nervous system through two different pathways, making resistance to both simultaneously much less likely. Even so, chemical treatments typically require two to three visits spaced about two weeks apart to catch newly hatched nymphs that survived as eggs during the first application.

Desiccant dusts offer a different approach entirely. These fine powders, made from silica gel or diatomaceous earth, destroy the waxy outer coating on a bed bug’s body, causing it to dehydrate and die. In lab testing at Ohio State University, a silica gel dust achieved 100% mortality across multiple exposure methods, while diatomaceous earth and several chemical dusts killed 65% or fewer bugs in brief-exposure tests. Desiccant dusts work well in wall voids, behind outlet covers, and inside furniture joints where bugs hide. Because the killing mechanism is physical rather than chemical, bugs can’t develop true resistance to it, though research has found that pyrethroid-resistant strains with thicker outer shells survived about 50% longer when exposed to silica gel dust compared to non-resistant strains.

What a Professional Treatment Plan Looks Like

Effective bed bug elimination almost always combines multiple methods. A pest control company will typically start with a thorough inspection, then recommend either heat treatment, chemical treatment, or both. The most common integrated approach uses heat or chemical sprays to knock down the active population, followed by desiccant dust applied to cracks, crevices, and wall voids for long-term protection against any survivors.

Expect to do some preparation before treatment: laundering and bagging all clothing and bedding, clearing clutter from floors and closets, and pulling furniture away from walls. After treatment, the company will usually schedule a follow-up inspection two weeks later to check for surviving bugs. Some companies offer warranties that cover retreatment if bugs reappear within 30 to 90 days.

Clutter is a bed bug’s best friend. The fewer hiding spots available, the more effective any treatment will be. Reducing clutter, sealing cracks in baseboards and around electrical outlets, and keeping encasements on your mattress and box spring all make reinfestation less likely and future treatments more successful if they’re ever needed again.
