Argentine Ants vs Fire Ants: What’s the Difference?

Argentine ants and fire ants are both invasive species that dominate landscapes across the southern United States, but they differ sharply in how they build colonies, how they affect ecosystems, and how much of a direct threat they pose to people. Argentine ants form massive, interconnected supercolonies and are primarily a nuisance pest. Fire ants build visible soil mounds and deliver painful, venomous stings that can be dangerous to humans and animals alike.

Colony Structure and Territory

The most fundamental difference between these two species is how they organize. Argentine ant colonies aren’t separate units. They link together into one enormous supercolony with multiple queens, meaning workers from different nests cooperate rather than compete. This gives Argentine ants an extraordinary advantage: they can spread continuously across a landscape without wasting energy fighting each other.

Fire ants take a different approach. Red imported fire ants come in two forms. The single-queen (monogyne) form has one reproducing queen per mound, and colony members are territorial, actively defending their turf against neighboring fire ant colonies. Mound densities for this form usually stay below 300 per acre. The multiple-queen (polygyne) form can house hundreds of unrelated queens in a single colony, with workers moving freely between mounds and sharing resources. Polygyne colonies can exceed 300 mounds per acre, packing far more ants into the same space.

Fire ant mounds are built from soft soil and rarely exceed 18 inches in diameter, though in cold, dry regions they tend to be smaller and harder to spot. Argentine ants don’t build conspicuous mounds at all. Their nests are typically found in moist soil, under rocks, or in leaf litter, making them far less visible even when populations are enormous.

Size, Appearance, and Sting

Argentine ants are small, uniformly dark brown, and only about 2 to 3 millimeters long. They don’t sting and rarely bite in a way that humans notice. Fire ants are slightly larger, reddish-brown to black, and range from about 2 to 6 millimeters depending on the caste. The size variation within a single fire ant colony is noticeable, with smaller and larger workers performing different roles.

The biggest practical difference for most people is the sting. Fire ants are aggressive when their mound is disturbed. They swarm quickly, grip skin with their jaws, and deliver repeated stings from a venomous abdominal stinger. Each sting produces a burning sensation followed by a white pustule that lasts for days. Multiple stings can cause serious allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Argentine ants pose no sting risk whatsoever.

Ecological Damage

Both species cause significant ecological harm, but through different mechanisms. Fire ants are direct predators of ground-nesting animals. They can kill young birds, small mammals, and reptiles. Horned lizards have disappeared across most of the range now dominated by red imported fire ants, likely from a combination of fire ants directly killing young lizards and fire ants wiping out the harvester ants that horned lizards depend on for food. Quail populations suffer similarly, not just from predation on chicks but from the removal of insect food that chicks need to survive.

Argentine ants cause ecological damage more subtly. Because their supercolonies eliminate competition from native ant species, they can collapse the local ant diversity in an area. Native ants fill important ecological roles as seed dispersers, soil aerators, and food sources for other animals, so losing them has cascading effects. In parts of California, Argentine ants have displaced nearly every native ant species in invaded habitats.

Both species also engage in a behavior called aphid farming. They protect aphids and other sap-sucking insects from predators in exchange for feeding on the sugary honeydew those insects produce. Fire ants tend and guard aphids and mealybugs on plant stems and roots, which can diminish plant health and vigor over time. Argentine ants do the same, and because their colonies are so vast, the scale of aphid protection can be significant in agricultural settings.

Agricultural and Economic Impact

Fire ants carry major economic costs through both management expenses and lost agricultural productivity. They damage electrical equipment by nesting in junction boxes and utility housings, interfere with harvesting equipment, and reduce yields in crops where their mounds obstruct machinery. Livestock, particularly young calves and poultry, are vulnerable to mass stinging events.

Argentine ants are more of an urban and horticultural pest. Their aphid-farming behavior can increase pest insect populations on fruit trees, ornamental plants, and some crops. In homes, they invade kitchens and bathrooms in enormous trailing lines, especially during hot or dry weather when they seek moisture and food indoors. While they don’t cause structural damage, the sheer volume of ants in a supercolony can make infestations feel relentless.

What Happens When They Meet

In areas where both species overlap, they compete for territory, and fire ants generally win direct confrontations. Fire ants are more aggressive, better armed with their stingers, and defend fixed mound territories. Argentine ants compensate with numbers and flexibility, often recolonizing areas after fire ant populations are reduced by weather, pesticides, or natural population cycles. In some parts of the southeastern U.S., the two species coexist in a shifting patchwork, with fire ants dominating open sunny areas and Argentine ants thriving in shadier, more irrigated zones near human habitation.

Control Methods

The bait preferences of these two species differ in ways that matter for control. Argentine ants are attracted to sweet baits year-round, with protein baits only drawing interest primarily in spring. For severe Argentine ant infestations, liquid borate baits (a low-concentration borate solution in sugar water) placed in refillable bait stations are the most effective approach. Results take several days to a week because the goal is for foraging workers to carry the slow-acting poison back to queens throughout the supercolony. Killing only the ants you can see accomplishes almost nothing when the colony stretches across an entire neighborhood.

Fire ants prefer baits containing oils, and granular bait products broadcast around mounds are a common control strategy. Individual mound treatments with drenches or dry products can eliminate specific colonies, but in polygyne populations where mounds number in the hundreds per acre, area-wide bait programs are more practical. Because single-queen fire ant colonies are territorial and self-contained, eliminating one mound actually removes that colony permanently, unlike Argentine ants where new workers simply flow in from connected nests.

Argentine ants, while highly invasive, are too widespread in most of their U.S. range for reporting to serve much purpose.
