Argentine Ants vs Carpenter Ants: Which Is Worse?

Argentine ants and carpenter ants are two of the most common household ant species in the United States, but they differ sharply in size, behavior, and the problems they cause. Argentine ants are tiny, trail-forming invaders that overwhelm kitchens and gardens with sheer numbers. Carpenter ants are much larger and pose a genuine structural threat by excavating wood for nesting. Knowing which one you’re dealing with changes how you respond.

How to Tell Them Apart

Size is the fastest way to distinguish them. Argentine ants measure about 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch, roughly the size of a sesame seed. Carpenter ants range from 1/4 to 1/2 inch, making even the smallest carpenter ant noticeably larger than an Argentine ant. If the ants in your home look like they come in different sizes within the same trail, you’re likely looking at carpenter ants, which are polymorphic (workers vary in size). Argentine ants are uniform in size across the colony.

Color helps too, but less reliably. Argentine ants are uniformly dark brown. Carpenter ants can be all black, reddish-brown, or a mix of red and black depending on species. One oddly useful test: crush an Argentine ant and smell it. They give off a stale, musty, greasy odor. Carpenter ants don’t.

Both species have a single petiole node (the small bump between the thorax and abdomen), so that won’t help you differentiate them. But carpenter ants have a smoothly rounded thorax when viewed from the side, while Argentine ants have a more angular profile with a distinctly pointed petiole node and a smooth, nearly hairless body.

Colony Size and Structure

This is where the two species diverge dramatically. A carpenter ant colony typically has a single queen and a few thousand workers. They establish a parent nest, usually outdoors in decaying wood like a tree stump, then expand by creating satellite colonies in nearby structures. When you find carpenter ants inside your home, they’re often living in a satellite nest while the main colony remains outside.

Argentine ants operate on a completely different scale. Their colonies contain multiple queens and can merge with neighboring colonies to form supercolonies, massive networks of interconnected nests where ants move freely between them. In Europe, researchers documented a single Argentine ant supercolony stretching over 6,000 kilometers from Italy to the Spanish Atlantic coast, making it the largest cooperative unit ever recorded in any animal. Even in a residential yard, an Argentine ant population can number in the millions, with trails extending over 350 feet from nest sites to food sources.

Where Each Species Lives

Argentine ants thrive in warm, moist environments. In the U.S., they’re most abundant in California’s coastal areas, the Southeast, and parts of the Gulf Coast. They’ve established populations in at least 15 countries across six continents, plus islands like Hawaii, New Zealand, and Japan. They nest in shallow soil, under debris, mulch, potted plants, and along foundations. They don’t excavate wood or cause structural damage.

Carpenter ants have a much broader range across the U.S., including cooler northern states where Argentine ants can’t survive. They’re found wherever there are trees and wooden structures. Their nests target wood that’s already softened by moisture, so they gravitate toward rotting stumps, water-damaged wall voids, areas near roof leaks, and wood in contact with soil. Finding carpenter ants in your home often signals an underlying moisture problem: a leaky roof, clogged gutters, or poor drainage.

What They Eat

Argentine ants are sugar-focused foragers. During warm months, they climb into trees and shrubs to collect honeydew, the sugar-rich excrement produced by aphids and scale insects. This is a stable, renewable food source they actively protect by tending the aphids like livestock. Indoors, they target anything sweet: fruit, juice, syrup, and sugary crumbs. Their trails are loose and fast-moving, with ants streaming in both directions along well-defined paths.

Carpenter ants have a broader diet that includes proteins, sugars, and fats. They’ll eat other insects, pet food, honey, and household scraps. A common misconception is that carpenter ants eat wood. They don’t. Unlike termites, carpenter ants excavate wood purely to create nesting galleries. The wood shavings get kicked out of the nest as frass, a sawdust-like debris often mixed with pieces of dead insects. Finding small piles of this material near baseboards or wall openings is a telltale sign of carpenter ant activity.

Structural Damage Risk

Argentine ants are a nuisance pest. They invade in overwhelming numbers, contaminate food, and their aphid-farming habit can damage garden plants indirectly. But they don’t harm your home’s structure.

Carpenter ants are a different story. Over time, their galleries weaken wooden beams, joists, and framing. The damage develops slowly, often over years, and tends to concentrate in wood that’s already compromised by moisture. You might notice faint rustling sounds inside walls, find small openings where frass is being expelled, or see large ants emerging from wall voids at night (they’re most active after dark). Outdoors, well-used trails may be visible along foundations, sidewalks, and flower beds. Indoors, they tend to follow room edges, cabinet perimeters, and utility lines running through walls.

Because carpenter ants prefer moisture-damaged wood, their presence is essentially a diagnostic tool. They’re pointing you toward a water problem that needs fixing regardless of the ants.

Controlling Argentine Ants

The sheer scale of Argentine ant colonies makes them frustrating to manage. Spraying ants indoors with pesticides provides only temporary relief and won’t prevent more from entering. The colony is outside, and killing the visible trail does nothing to the queens producing replacements.

Start by wiping up invading ants with soapy water to destroy the chemical scent trails they leave behind. Identify entry points and seal them with caulk. Move infested potted plants outdoors and submerge the pots in a solution of insecticidal soap and water to flush out nests.

The most effective approach is slow-acting bait placed outdoors near trails and nest openings. The bait needs to work slowly enough that foraging workers carry it back to the colony before dying, eventually reaching the queens. For severe Argentine ant infestations, liquid borate baits (a 0.5 to 1 percent borate solution in sugar water) placed in refillable bait stations tend to work best. Prepackaged bait stations or stakes are the safest and simplest option for most homeowners.

Controlling Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ant control starts with finding the nest, or at least the satellite nest inside your home. Follow their trails at night with a flashlight. Outdoors, check dead stumps, woodpiles, and trees with openings or cavities. Indoors, tap along baseboards and walls listening for a hollow sound or faint rustling.

Preventing future infestations matters as much as eliminating the current one. Remove dead tree stumps from your yard. Store firewood off the ground on a concrete pad, away from the house, and only keep what you’ll use in one season. The longer wood sits undisturbed, the more attractive it becomes. Seal openings in living trees. Paint or seal exposed wood before it gets wet, and replace any wood that’s been damaged by water, previous infestations, or rot. Eliminate anywhere wood contacts soil directly.

For active nests inside walls, dust-based insecticides applied into wall voids through small entry holes can reach the colony. Boric acid and silica gel products are commonly used. Bait stations similar to those used for Argentine ants also work, though carpenter ant baits are typically formulated with protein attractants rather than pure sugar. Spraying firewood with insecticides is not recommended, as it’s ineffective and wastes product.

Which One Is Worse?

It depends on what you mean by “worse.” Argentine ants are far more invasive ecologically. They displace native ant species wherever they spread, disrupt ecosystems, and are nearly impossible to eradicate once established. Inside your home, they invade in staggering numbers that can make a kitchen feel unusable.

Carpenter ants cause less visible disruption day to day but pose a real financial threat. Untreated colonies can compromise structural wood over several years, leading to costly repairs. They’re also a red flag for moisture problems that, left unaddressed, create conditions for wood rot and mold beyond what the ants themselves cause. If you’re finding large ants and sawdust-like debris in your home, the urgency is higher than it would be for a trail of tiny Argentine ants on your countertop.
