Are Termites Easy to Get Rid Of? Not Really

Termites are not easy to get rid of. They rank among the most difficult household pests to eliminate because their colonies are large, hidden, and spread through areas you can’t see or reach without specialized equipment. Most infestations require professional treatment, and even then, full elimination can take weeks to months depending on the type of termite and the construction of your home.

Why Termites Are So Hard to Eliminate

The core problem with termites is that the damage you can see represents only a fraction of the infestation. Colonies can number in the hundreds of thousands, and the workers causing structural damage operate inside walls, under slabs, and through underground tunnels that are largely invisible. Spraying the termites you happen to spot does almost nothing to the colony itself, which may be nested deep in the soil or inside structural wood far from view.

Certain building types make the problem worse. Slab-on-ground construction, where concrete sits directly on soil, creates conditions that the USDA describes as “very difficult to control” because termites can enter through tiny cracks in the slab with no visible signs above ground. Basement rooms present similar challenges: infestations there are hard to both detect and treat. By the time most homeowners notice swarmers, mud tubes, or soft spots in wood, the colony has been active for months or years.

Why DIY Treatments Usually Fail

Over-the-counter termite sprays are designed to kill termites on contact or create a surface barrier around a small area. They can handle the termites you see, but that’s precisely why they fall short. The colony itself, including the queen producing new workers, is almost never reachable with a consumer spray can. Untreated areas allow the infestation to persist and spread, and many of the most effective termiticides are restricted to licensed applicators by state law. You simply can’t buy them.

There are some limited steps a homeowner can take. Removing wood that contacts the soil, fixing moisture problems, and eliminating cellulose debris near the foundation can reduce the risk of new infestations. But once termites are established inside a structure, these measures alone won’t stop them.

How Professional Liquid Treatments Work

The most common approach for subterranean termites is a liquid termiticide applied to the soil around and beneath the foundation. Professionals use power sprayers to inject chemicals into trenches and drill holes along footings, creating a continuous barrier that termites can’t cross without contacting the treatment. In many cases, holes are drilled every 12 inches down to the top of the footing to ensure full coverage, and inaccessible wall voids may need to be drilled and injected as well.

Modern liquid treatments use non-repellent chemicals, meaning termites don’t detect the treated soil and walk right through it. These products kill slowly on purpose. A contaminated worker carries traces of the chemical back to the colony and passes it to nestmates through normal contact and grooming. This transfer effect amplifies the treatment’s reach well beyond the barrier itself, gradually poisoning workers that never touched the treated soil directly. It’s effective, but it’s not instant. Weeks may pass before colony activity drops significantly.

How Bait Stations Work

Bait systems take a different approach. Stations are inserted into the ground every 10 to 20 feet around the foundation, about 2 to 4 feet from the wall. Inside each station is a cellulose material laced with a slow-acting insect growth regulator. Worker termites find the stations during their normal underground foraging, eat the bait, and carry it back to feed colony members that don’t forage on their own: the queen, the king, soldiers, and workers tending offspring.

The catch is that growth regulators work by disrupting molting, so they only kill immature termites that are still growing. They don’t directly kill the reproductive adults or soldiers. The colony shrinks as younger termites die and aren’t replaced, but this process can take several months before the population is substantially reduced. Bait systems require patience and regular monitoring to confirm the colony is declining.

Drywood Termites Often Need Fumigation

Drywood termites are a different species that lives entirely inside the wood it eats, with no ground contact. Because the colony is embedded in structural timber and can be spread across multiple hidden locations in a home, localized spot treatments often miss satellite colonies. The most reliable option is whole-structure fumigation.

Fumigation involves sealing the entire building under tarps and filling it with sulfuryl fluoride gas. The gas penetrates walls, framing, and furniture to reach every infestation simultaneously, including ones hidden from view. When properly monitored with gas concentration lines inside the structure, fumigation has a high rate of success, killing drywood termites within several days. The downside: you, your family, your pets, and your plants must vacate for several days while the structure is treated and aired out. Roof damage from tarps being dragged across the surface is also a possibility.

Whole-structure heat treatment is an alternative that avoids chemicals entirely. The process involves heating all wood in the building to at least 120°F and holding that temperature for a minimum of 33 minutes. Occupants only need to leave for hours rather than days. However, heat treatment has variable success depending on the size of the structure and the amount of wall covering and furnishings that can create “heat sinks,” areas where temperatures don’t reach lethal levels. Heat-sensitive items like electronics and certain plastics may also be damaged.

What Happens After Treatment

Eliminating a termite colony doesn’t mean your home is permanently protected. Subterranean termites are present in the soil throughout most of the United States, and a treated structure can be reinfested by a neighboring colony that finds a new entry point. Liquid barriers degrade over time, and bait stations need ongoing monitoring.

After treatment, any old mud tubes should be scraped away completely so that new activity is easy to spot during future checks. If you see mud tubes reappear or notice new swarmers indoors, those are signs of continued or new activity. Finding old damage without live termites doesn’t necessarily mean the problem is current. It may be leftover from a previous infestation that was already controlled.

Annual inspections are the standard recommendation, especially in high-risk regions. Buildings in areas with Formosan termites, an especially aggressive species, should be inspected every year regardless of whether they’ve ever had an infestation. The cost of an annual inspection is small compared to the structural repair bills that come from catching a reinfestation late.
