Buck moth caterpillars are dark, spiny caterpillars found on oak trees across the eastern United States, best known for delivering a painful sting when touched. They grow up to 2.5 inches long, are most active in late spring and early summer, and are one of the more commonly encountered stinging caterpillars in the region.
How to Identify a Buck Moth Caterpillar
The buck moth caterpillar is brown to purplish black with numerous yellow spots along its body. Its most distinctive feature is rows of branching spines that cover the entire body. The spines running along the top are longer and have more branches than those on the sides. Spine tips can be red or black. The caterpillar’s breathing holes (small openings along its sides) are pale brown edged in black, which can help distinguish it from similar-looking species.
Fully grown larvae reach about 2.5 inches in length. A dark color form also exists that lacks the yellow spots, making it harder to identify at a glance. Regardless of color variation, the multi-branched spines are always present and are the key identification clue. If you see a dark, spiny caterpillar on an oak tree between April and June, there’s a good chance it’s a buck moth.
Where and When They Appear
Buck moths are native to oak woodlands throughout the eastern United States. Adult moths lay eggs in the fall, and those eggs overwinter on branches before hatching in the spring. The caterpillars are most commonly encountered in early summer, peaking around June, though timing varies by latitude. In the Deep South, particularly around New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, caterpillars may appear as early as March or April.
Oak trees are the primary host. In the Northeast, the caterpillars favor scrub oak and dwarf chestnut oak. In the South, water oak and live oak are the most important hosts. They’ll also feed on willow, hazelnut, cherry, and rose, though survival rates on non-oak species are generally poor. Research has shown larval survival exceeds 75% on water oak, live oak, black oak, and black cherry, but drops below 5% on most other tree species tested.
You’re most likely to encounter them in parks, residential yards with large oaks, and wooded trails. The caterpillars feed in groups when young and tend to descend from trees as they mature, which is when most human contact happens.
What Happens to Trees They Feed On
When populations are high, buck moth caterpillars can strip most of the foliage from individual oaks or small clusters of trees, leaving them looking bare. This looks alarming but is cosmetic. Oaks replace lost foliage after the caterpillars disappear, and by mid-summer the trees typically show no signs of damage. The species is classified as a periodic defoliator of oak forests but is not considered destructive to forest resources. No specific management plans are recommended for the trees themselves.
Why the Sting Hurts
Each of those branching spines is a hollow, quill-like hair connected to a small poison sac at its base. When the spines pierce your skin, they break off and release venom. Because the caterpillar has so many spines arranged in dense rows, even brief contact can embed dozens of them at once.
The pain is immediate and often described as sharp or burning, similar to a wasp sting but more widespread across the contact area. Over the next several hours, symptoms typically progress through a predictable pattern: initial sharp pain gives way to redness, swelling, and intense itching. Some people develop blistering or a raised rash that can persist for days. The swelling sometimes extends well beyond the sting site.
Very young children, elderly individuals, and people with compromised immune systems are more likely to experience severe reactions. In rare cases, a sting can trigger a systemic allergic response with symptoms like flushing, hives spreading beyond the sting area, difficulty breathing, or anaphylaxis. These reactions require emergency medical attention.
How to Treat a Sting
The priority is removing the spines from your skin, since they continue releasing venom as long as they’re embedded. Don’t use your bare hands to brush them off, as you’ll just sting your fingers too. Instead, press a piece of tape (any kind works) firmly over the affected area, sticky side down, and peel it away. Repeat with fresh strips until no more spines pull free.
Once the spines are out, wash the area with soap and water. A hydrocortisone cream applied to the site helps with inflammation and itching. An over-the-counter antihistamine like diphenhydramine can ease itching and swelling. If blistering develops, an ointment combining hydrocortisone with an antibiotic can help prevent infection while the skin heals.
One important note: standard antihistamine drugs used for bee and wasp stings are reportedly ineffective against caterpillar venom. The mechanism is different from a typical insect sting, so don’t expect the same relief you’d get from treating a yellow jacket sting. Ice packs and pain relievers can help manage discomfort in the meantime.
How to Avoid Getting Stung
During peak season, check oak tree trunks and low branches before leaning against them. The caterpillars often crawl down trunks in groups, and they blend in well against dark bark. Watch where children play under oaks, especially in areas where buck moths are common. Fallen caterpillars on sidewalks and playground equipment are a frequent source of stings in southern cities.
Gardening gloves and long sleeves provide good protection if you’re working around oaks in spring and early summer. If you spot a caterpillar, simply leave it alone. The spines are purely defensive, and the caterpillar has no interest in you. By mid-summer the caterpillars will have pupated underground, and the oak canopy will have fully recovered, leaving little trace of the season’s activity.
